Both movies stay within the main themes of the book, the one glaring exception being, Charlie drinking the fizzy lifting drink in the '71 version. There are a few deviations from the book and both movies expand parts beyond the scope of the book, but they are close enough. The reason I didn't like the movie, is that it focused too much on Wonka and not enough on the message (and Johnny Depp really wasn't that good in the movie).

While I loved "Willy Wonka", I was disappointed that it wasn't closer to the book. I liked Tim Burton's version because he stayed closer to the book, though Johnny's portrayal of Willy was only ok for me. I think I didn't care for the voice he used. But you gotta love a guy who comes up with a character's voice while playing dolls with his daughter. That's probably why everyone was hating Charlie and the Chocolate Factory because a) it wasn't anything like the original and b) it was close to the book.
(on a side note, I really liked Burton's adaptation of Sweeney Todd as well...even if Johnny isn't the best singer, he got the point across)

I'm excited for it. The promotional shots released look pretty good.
Enough said.

i didn't mind Depp's performance as much as I HATED the way they did the Umpalumpa's. I didn't care for the actor and having him duplicated was just so terrible, it totally ruined the movie for me, I would leave the room when I knew he or the Umpalumpa's were going to be on.MmeLeota wrote:While I loved "Willy Wonka", I was disappointed that it wasn't closer to the book. I see your point, but I guess that's what I want from Disney...something that's all sunshine and roses.agingerbugg wrote:If you have ever read the book, it isn't the sunshine and roses that Disney made it out to be. The same with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory; for its time, it is a really dark children's book

Ah, but in the book the oompa loompas are not orange. Deep Roy (the actor in the Burton film) is closer to the original oompa loompas because he is African.MmeLeota wrote:yeah, I am kinda partial to little men with orange faces and white overalls...that is one thing I really liked from the original.I HATED the way they did the Umpalumpa's
*trivia alert* the first edition of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory described the oompa loompas as skinny African pygmies. As a result of criticism later editions were changed by Dahl to describe the oompa loompas as having funny long golden brown hair and rosy-white skin.

I don't care for that actor, I have seen him in other things. I don't care if the oompa loompas were orange, white, purple, african, chinese, or what, they should have used other actors and not use just one and mulitply him, IMO it ruined the movie. I am sure there were little ppl (sorry don't know the PC word to use these days) that they could have hired. But to each his ownagingerbugg wrote:Ah, but in the book the oompa loompas are not orange. Yeah, I know they aren't orange in the book, but I thought the whole orange, green & white thing was funny (maybe because I'm from Irish heritage?).Ah, but in the book the oompa loompas are not orange. I'm just afraid that Burton will make this movie all style and no substance. Just because it looks pretty doesn't mean it will be good. There are too many times in hollywood where they focus on special effects and costumes but the story is horrid.
I thought I read somewhere that it WONT really be based too closely on the book. It will be Burton's version/idea of Alice in Wonderland. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

For those cricizing the Willy Wonka movies (Burton's vs. the 70's musical), here's something you should be aware of: the 70's musical version does in fact differ from the book, true, but all those changes and additional material was in fact written by the author himself! Roald Dahl wrote the screenplay for the 70's version, so any deviation from the book is from the mind of the author himself!

Looks like a winner. The more I see on trailers, the better it looks.Soarin08 wrote:Two words- SOOOOOO EXCITED!!!!!!!Clusty wrote:What do you guys think of this?
