My dad, being a cast member, was able to go to the Disney library at WDW and the people there dubbed their library copy and gave it to us for free! It is a great movie, and it's a shame that it hasn't been released for America.
I have heard rumors that if the Princess and the Frog movie does well, with it having an African American princess in it, they will try to release Song of the South to America!

I saw it as a kid, and loved it. I got a bad video copy a few years ago. It came from over seas. Then just a year ago, I got to watch it again. This time, a real good copy, on dvd. My memory was better than the real movie. The movie sucks. The animation is great, but the real life drama drags you down. Just real sad other people can't see this movie.pkbabygirl wrote:I love these characters and the movie. Also one of my dad's favorites (as is Splash at WDW). I don't think it will ever be released from the vault.

i want to see this movie. i've heard lots of stories about it being racist and such but i don't understand. maybe it's because i haven't seen it. there are lots of movies about african americans and slavery but those aren't banned. i wish it would come out!

I don't think the actual movie is considered "racist." I believe most of the problem revolves around Uncle Remus being portrayed as "happy." And some feel that it is inappropriate to portray a former (or current) slave to be happy.earningmyfins wrote:i want to see this movie. i've heard lots of stories about it being racist and such but i don't understand. maybe it's because i haven't seen it. there are lots of movies about african americans and slavery but those aren't banned. i wish it would come out!
The movie itself has nothing whatsover to do with race. It's about a family going through a split (father leaving), and how a grandfatherly figure (Uncle Remus) helps the young boy through his troubles by telling him stories to help him learn how to deal with problems. Those stories are animated, and those are the characters on Splash Mountain.
Even if they (Disney) don't feel that they could ever release this movie, wouldn't it be possible to just release the cartoons (other than the tar baby)?

It's interesting how things change. Even Pirate's has felt the affects of "appropriateness" as it's been toned down in Refurbs. Remember the pirate chasing the woman prior to the woman chasing a pirate in the burning town? Pre-2006, remember the woman hiding in the barrell because she didn't have her dress?
Politically correctness has taken on a huge life of its own that is a bit extreme. I've worked for my current company for 4 years and in that time the titles of some jobs have changed 3 times (ie - Recruiter - Staffing Specialist - Talent Acquisition Specialist). Yea --- recruiter.

Here's how I would do it: release the film on DVD, but start it out with someone (probably Bob Iger) looking at the camera.
"Hi, I'm Bob Iger, President of the Disney company. What you are about to watch is ..."
And he then goes into a little bit about how the world was different back then, how people were offended, how no offense was meant, and how today's world knows the issue. Maybe just five minutes at the front to explain it, then show the movie. It makes sense to me.

I found a copy of the movie online, I haven't watched it yet, but I did download it. I will watch it tonight, and let everyone know if it is so offensive that its banning was justified.

Yeah I've seen something like this on the Vault DVDs. They would explain that some of this stuff was written in a different time period so some things may be offensive now or something to that affect. But I guess since this is live action, it may be different than a cartoon. Here's how I would do it: release the film on DVD, but start it out with someone (probably Bob Iger) looking at the camera.
