Since i did already see the movie, i will just comment on how i thought it was a great movie, and i do hope that they make a 4th movie. I am a huge fan of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. I thought all three were great.

I just saw POTC3 yesterday. (I never got to see it in the movies, but I bought the dvd when it came out). I thought it was pretty good, the plot was confusing, but I think i can make sense of it after watching it again. I do have a question though: Why did they make such a big deal about bringing Calypso back when she just basically disapears once she's released? Sure, she creates a whirlpool, but both ships proved that they could have sailed out of it at any time. It was sort of like the White Witch in Prince Caspian. (For lack of another analogy now that Narnia is on my mind)

I never really like when movies go messing about with Death, Purgatory and bringing back the dead. There are too many loopholes and few films can do it efficiently. Pirates of the Caribbean had MANY loopholes because of the theme's significance to the entire story.

Another thing that I thought would have been a neat nod to the ride (and which I thought was going to happen) was if they had to sail back up the waterfall.

Calypso is a Heathen God that is trapped in the Human form of Tia Dalma (hence her ability to bring Barbossa back from the dead, and know of Will turner's destiny in movie 2.

The first (CoBP) and second (DMC) movies were great, and easily understood in the plot department. But, 3 (AWE) was very disjointed, and full of plot holes. I know that they were still writing while filming (from interviews on the DMC DVD), but I think they could have done a MUCH better job (both on plot and script) than they did. I have yet to pick up the DVD, as I do believe I'll be getting it for Christmas.

then, the reason they brought back calypso was so they could get Captain Jack back?

She's there to make sure all 9 Pirate Lords are brought back so they can release her and she can then have her revenge against the man who trapped her in Human form.

I agree with most people here that the plot of At World's End was sub-par. As most people have said, it's very disjointed. I also wanted to add that I didn't feel it went along with the theme of the other movies as well. Curse of the Black Pearl is still an amazing movie, and the plot, characters, acting and production were all excellent. I thought that Dead Man's Chest wasn't as good, but still felt like the first PotC in terms of character development and scale of story, etc. I thought that At World's End didn't adhere to the first two at all, and tried to do something on a more grand scale and failed. I felt that Calypso's storyline was a complete waste and could have been left out entirely. The East India Company storyline might have been a better focus for the movie, but it was completely lost in all the other side stories.

on this note, I agree that they could have focused more on the attempted control of the seas and left Calypso out. The writers started too many storylines going, and needed to wrap them all up, which was a mistake. They should have stuck with 1 or 2 storylines, not the 10 they wound up with...

I agree with both of you, and I believe that they could have had a much smaller role for Davy Jones in the second one. But, since he was a primary character of the storyline, then I think it certainly was important to have Calypso in the third movie... to explain why Jone cut his heart out.

I never understood people who liked the second movie and hated the third. None of the films are flawless. They are all a little overstuffed. The sequels are more bloated than the first film. But to me, AWE has all the same strengths and weaknesses as DMC.

I am planning re-watching them all ASAP at once to see how the flow goes. I suspect PoTC II will be as much of a "bridge" movie as I think it was and I will like I and II the most. I have to admit, it seems as though they listened to the PoTC Flow Through and stuffed as much dialog from the ride into III as possible and I actually liked it. Made me smile!

I strongly belive there will be a fourth but I think it will be a fork and not a straight PoTC IV.
