That's right. It all had to do with the inlcusion of sound in the cartoons. As you probably know, Steamboat Willie was the very first animated short to feature sound. Plane Crazy and Gallopin' Gaucho were already completed, but they lacked audio, so Walt decided to concentrate on developing Steamboat Willie with sound. After that cartoon was completed, the studio began adding sound to the two other Mickey cartoons. Always the innovator, Walt thought the sacrifice of time and money would pay off in the end--he was right!

Happy Belated 78th Mickey! We can still celebrate your birthday weekend, right? I'd better get out the Mickey-roni and Cheese!
Drop another coin in slot and I will tell you more.

I can't believe I forgot to wish a happy birthday to Mickey yesterday. I always try to because, coincidentally enough, it is my birthday too.

Oh, and I've done a lot of studying up on the chicken and the egg controversy over Mickey Mouse premiers (mostly to find out if I really do share a birthday with the mouse) and here's what I've always gathered:

Plane Crazy was the first Mickey Mouse cartoon made, but Steamboat Willie was the first that premiered. Plane Crazy came next and then Gallopin' Gaucho.
