They've kinda done that with Toy Story. Though, admittedly, it's TV and not a movie... they made a Disney Channel cartoon "Buzz Lightyear of Star Command" or something. they had those little green alien things as friends, and gave Buzz some kind of sidekick. I tired to sit through a 30 minute episode to see how it was (I loved the movies), but I couldn't make it 5 minutes.sockfire wrote: So, the idea of converting old content to CG has been trod upon. What about the idea of re-doing CG movies like Toy Story or Finding Nemo by hand?

CG is so much easier, you can make a model once and then animate it anyway you want for years to come, there's even stored actions for these models. That's why Dreamworks is cranking out so many movies. I'm sure the bones structure is mostly the same with different skins layed over them.
In my opinion, there will never be a replacement for hand drawn animation. Unless they come out with a way for 3D models to look 2D. I've seen the cellshaders for 3D but the motion is still too perfect and colors are too exact. There's something about the imperfections of hand animation that make them special.
Of course, because 3D is cheaper, Disney will probably continue that way.

Of course, we all love Disney animation.
Maybe I've just studied film too much or made too many tv shows lately, but, for me, when the camera moves in for a closeup, the music crescendos, the emotion builds... and the facial features get misaligned and you realize you're looking at a drawing not a person (thinking Arial on the rock
and basically every other hand-drawn film), the movie just comes to a screeching halt. It's a very difficult thing to pull off, but man, I hate that.
From then on, it's like trying to start the whole suspension-of-disbelief process all over again (making a connection to easily identifiable reality, twisting it a little bit, a little bit more... then break out the appealing magic), which is difficult in the middle of a film, especially one rooted in fantasy (which is why old-style musicals, which I enjoy, aren't so popular anymore)...
Just look at the Incredibles. No one has ever worked as hard at a movie as they did. And it is absolutely perfect. No errors, weirdness, or any distractions --- and once you're in, they've got you. Great story, characters, animation, story arcs.... absolutely brilliant. Standing on the shoulders of the giants (or dwarves) who went before, yes, but still reaching new heights.
I love the old stuff, yet welcome the new. The king is dead, long live the king (and I'm glad they're all in the same, happy Disney family).

I like both... although some of the Pixars have been lacking for me lately... I have to say though that I never can find any better movie when I am in a bad mood than putting on an old Disney classic like Alladin or Lion King and just laughing for a while at some old memories... yah so even though I like both I think the classic style has to win me over.
Long live the classics and I am here to embrace the future in hopes that they find a way to make the CG plot lines just a smidge bit better...
