It's worse.boilerbabe wrote:Oh no! You guys seriously can't make it down there?! I'm so sorry to hear that.
I can't get home from the airport either, the trains have been cancelled.
Todays flights to Orlando made it out OK, I just couldn't get a place on any of them

They're taunting me !!!

Oh no! Are you having flash-backs to "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles" yet? (Movie with Steve Martin and John Candy. A must-see.)Joe90 wrote:It's worse.boilerbabe wrote:Oh no! You guys seriously can't make it down there?! I'm so sorry to hear that.

Joe90, I am so sorry to hear about the problems. If it is any consolation, the weather was the worst I have ever been running through. Even though I finished and got the medal, it was brutal.
Now that race report I promised:
Saturday's alarm sounded at 2:15am to get ready and meet the bus by 3:00am. We (my DW and I) turned on the Weather Channel to find the temperature around 30 degrees! The forecast was for sleet, snow and rain mixed and the high was only supposed to be 34! We added as many layers as we could. I wore thermal underwear, my running outfit, two socks on each foot, a shell jacket, and a new sweatsuit on the outside. We carried a garbage bag each for waterproofing before the race. All the time I was thinking about the rule - "Don't do anything new on race day".
We arrived at the Staging area and met a friend who was also running the Half. It was very cold and starting to sleet. Good thing too, because the sleet bounced off instead of soaking in! The first wave of starts was to begin at 5:35, so we waited in the crowd and were warm enough because of our extra clothes.
We walked to our Corral (G) for our start while our friend went to the B corral (he is quite fast). The sleet didn't let up, but a drizzle of rain with a few flakes of snow started to mix in. We removed our sweatsuits and threw them to the side of the course (Disney donated all of these to charity - good karma for us!). We crossed the start line about 6:15.
More to follow in the next post.

I'm anxiously awaiting to hear the rest withspirit!!!!! I was having flashbacks to '05 and waking up before the crack of dawn to get to the start line!!! Coral "G", I'm impressed! I'm sorry to hear the weather was so bad for you though. Cold weather running is not bad when you're properly dressed but if it's sleeting/snowing, you're basically out of luck. Wet and cold are the worst running conditions.
I'm glad to hear you persevered you got your medal!!! Please post a pic. if you can!!!! CONGTRATULATIONS!

We were in the fourth "wave" of starts and the course was VERY crowed for the first leg to the Magic Kingdom.
I got a little too warm shortly after the start and took off my running jacket and tied it around my waist (it's too expensive to throw that one away!). My DW had bought two caps with ear flaps and a "neck gaiter" that could be pulled up over our noses (which immediately fogs glasses
). These were lifesavers in these condition.
After the Magic Kingdom we passed a couple playing an accordian!
They were out in this weather without having to be! The cheering, high fives, and shouted encouragement did wonders for a bunch of soggy runners! We passed cheerleaders, trumpet players, DJs, characters, and a great sounding gospel choir.
Back to the run... Leaving the MK we ran between the Poly and Shades of Green. The crowd began to thin during this "road running" area and we got back on pace. There were two (overpass) hills and then Epcot came into view (that's where the finsh line is!
). My DW asked if we could "pick up the pace" but I didn't have any reserve left (probably because I was not 100% well yet
).
We saw my DW's parents at mile 13 or so for a quick wave and hug, and then ran hand-in-hand across the finish. They gave us a mylar "space" blanket, our medals (sorry, no pics yet), some food and we met DW's parents at the reunion area.
Then the cold began to soak in!
We were not running anymore, it was still raining, and the bus line was unbelievably long. We finally got a warm bus home and I sat in the hot-tub and added hot water until I wasn't cold anymore. I didn't know the leading edge of your skin turns bright pink when it's too cold!
We finished, got medals, and had a good run in spite of the conditions. My DWs friends are already asking if I am running the Marathon next year.
I still don't know about that. Would I do the half again - sure. Boilerbabe you were right, Disney running just has to be experienced!
Thanks to all of you for the encouragement - especially while I was sick - and the information you gave in your posts. This was fun.

Congrats! I was there watching a friend and her sister run that weekend. I am not envious of you guys! The early wake-up, the sleet/snow and rain. It was just plain raw out there. Quite and accomplishment to finish.
I did read that some good came of the brutal weather. About 30,000 pieces of clothing (hats, coats, gloves, sweatshirts and the like) were collected after being dropped by runners, cleaned and given to several central Florida charities for distribution to the less fortunate.
