What have you taken part in at a Disney Park?

Post by I am Sulley » Jun Sun 23, 2013 10:11 am

I was thinking about how my user name came about following my selection to perform as Sulley at the Monsters Inc. Laugh Floor. (see: How did you choose your Subsonic user name)
I realised that in our two trips to WDW someone from our family group had been selected six times to take part in something.
I started to feel quite privileged but then thought that there must be folk out there who have achieved similar fame or even done better than we have.
For the record our appearances are as follows:
1 - Magic Kingdom 1998. We had stationed ourselves just across the bridge opposite the Sleepy hollow snack bar ready to watch the "Disney's Magical Moments" Parade. As we enjoyed it with our girls then aged 8 & 5 the parade came to halt with the Alice in Wonderland float by us. The Characters got down from the float and along with some CMs selected children including our two girls to dance with them. Our daughters were handed flags by the White Rabbit and then danced in circles waving their flags with Alice and her friends for a couple of minutes. Two excited children then returned to mum & dad as the parade moved on.
2 - Disney MGM Studios 1998. It was cool and wet so looking for an indoor attraction we headed for the ABC 1 Saturday Morning Show. Being from the UK we had no idea what it was but sounded fun. The host was quickly looking for volunteers to help create the sound effects in his story and we asked our girls if they wanted to take part. Our eldest said yes and put up her hand - she was chosen and trotted up to the front. For some reason none of us can remember what sound effect she played but who cares its the taking part that counts
3 - Animal Kingdom 1998. We were resting our feet in The Boneyard watching the girls play as they dug for fossils in the sand. A film crew from a Spanish speaking company came over filming. The female presenter asked a couple of children to move over so she could do her piece to camera. She said something to our youngest before arranging our children as the focal point for her shoot. We watched from the edge and when it finished the girls came over to us and we asked our young daughter what the lady had said to her. The question was " Can I film you while you dig?" the answer "Only if my sister is in it too!" The lady had no option after that!
4 - Epcot 1998. Wandering round World Showcase we came to Mexico just as some musicians were setting up. This was a group called Huitzilin performing native Mexican music. We stopped to watch and after opening their show they were looking to add additional musicians to their group. Children of course are generally near the front and a maraca was offered to our eldest daughter who accepted and was then led forwards to join in the next piece.
So we had managed to perform in each park. The thought that we might repeat this when we went back in 2011 didn't cross my mind however we managed to come up with what I think are the best.
I will add these in a follow up post shortly :D

Neat idea for a discussion I am Sulley! I will have to think back to remember what all we have done :D

What a fun discussion!

Off the top of my head, I can think of 3 things, but one is a repeat:

1) May 1992 - I got to do sound effects for the Monster Sound Show at the then named Disney MGM Studios park. I don't remember all of the effects I did, but I was the part with the thunder/wind and chandelier drop. (funny story...the chandelier dropped on screen and about 3 seconds later you heard the crash...yep, I was a pro   )

2 & 3) 2000 & 2001? - Disneyland park - during the 45th anniversary of the park, the Parade of the Stars ran. Before the parade, Cast Members selected random park guests to be in the parade and loaded them into the omnibus and transported them to the start of the parade route. I was fortunate enough to participate in this "ritual" twice. The first time is the one I remember most, as it was in the year 2000 and it was a little more special than the second time. Basically, they took us backstage by IASW and divided us into groups. From there, each group learned their choreography. Then we were given our "costumes"...a tutu to wear over our clothes and a plush animal hat to match whichever group we were in (mine was the purple rhino group we were part of the Fantasia float). So when showtime came around, we danced our way through the park while waving to the guests and interacting with characters. At the end of the route, they had a water station set up for us (thank goodness since it was summer and HOT!) and we got to keep the hats and wear them proudly throughout the park.
The parade ran for several years after the 45th anniversary, but they stopped using the animal hats, so the second time (which I think was in the fall or winter) there was no hat...only a tutu. This time, I was at the end of the parade and we danced with several characters and did a lot of waving. I had a blast both times though! It was the closest I would ever get to my dream of being a parade performer/entertainer for Disney! :)

That parade sounds cool MmeLeota! :D
I was in the Monster Sound Stage too, but I have no idea what part I had.

That parade sounds really fun MmeLeota and I can understand why the first time was more special.
I note you didn't turn it down the second time saying "Oh No I have already done this!"

Gosh I've has so many moments like that. I don't know where to start! I don't remember years at all, but by some of the situations, you can get a good idea. My first real "wow" moment was when they made Mickey's Birthday land. The main attraction was an interactive show that moved from room to room. I think it was about throwing Mickey bday party. Well, anyhow. during room transitions, the characters would hold the hands of kids while skipping over. I don't know why, but I must have been about 8, and Mickey grabbed my hand and off we went. My parents has my baby sister and brother with them so they couldn't keep up. They held up the entire show until they found my parents again, and Mickey brought me to them himself! I will post more of my interactions later!

Heck no! ;) :D
Like I mentioned, it was a dream of mine to work there as a parade performer/entertainer...those 2 opportunities were the closest I ever got to it. I used the "princess wave" that my friend who had worked at MK as a parade performer for part of the time and totally performed all out to get the most of my dream. I may have looked like a fool, but I wasn't going to see 99.9% of those people again, so who cares?

That is so awesome yodiwan! Hopefully you will have moments like that when M gets older, and have a whole new set of memories! :)

We've had a couple of instances with our niece:
When she was 2, we took her to DL for the first time. We weren't sure how she was going to handle the characters, but Ariel was her favorite at the time...so we headed over the Ariel's Grotto and got in line to meet Ariel. Just as we were next in line, the CM told us that Ariel would be right back. But Ariel told the CM to wait...she called our niece up to her even though she "would be right back" and our niece was completely starstruck. She couldn't say a word...she wouldn't smile for the picture (even though Ariel was tickling her chin)...she just stood there with her mouth gaping. We told Ariel her name and she was even more floored when she heard Ariel speak her name! She managed to hand Ariel her autograph book, and when it was all over and we were leaving (totally hoping that she hadn't been scared stiff) she couldn't stop talking and her face was so full of wonder. She had lots of character admirers that trip...Snow White, Aurora, Cinderella, Mad Hatter and Alice, Mary Poppins, Pluto, Mickey, Minnie, Mulan, Aladdin and Jasmine...she didn't have a problem with a single one!

Another trip we made with her was for her 8th birthday (which also happened to coincide with the 50th anniversary) and she blushed when Prince Phillip danced with her. She also had some fun interactions with the Green Army Men from the Block Party Bash parade at DCA.

The coolest thing I can remember is my family and I being selected to be part of a group that was used for the 25th Anniversary. I don't remember the exact details, but it involved everyone holding up a sign with a year from 1971-1996. The year you held up meant something to that person. I'll have to ask everyone else in my family for more on this. I don't really remember it too well as I was barely 6.

The closest I came to being picked for anything was way back in 87 (I think), there was some special promotion on for an anniversary of the park (87 seems wrong but that was the year I went - it was April, so maybe the promotion started after April in 86 and ran for a year to celebrate 15 years???), anyway, they handed out large stickers and it allowed you to do something - though I don't remember what :( (25+ years later and my memory is shot).

Actually participating in something was a couple of family members got selected in Nov 2000 to be part of the special effects demo at MGM where you are on a boat and they splash water all over you and shoot bullets from a plane during WW2.

We were chosen as Family of the Day at Hollywood Studios back in 2009! It was really cool, they took us into a VIP lounge and gave us Fast Passes for the day. They asked us to choose between ToT and RnRC, so were driven down Hollywood Blvd and escorted into RnRC for a ride all by ourselves!

Such a fun experience!

It's great to hear that so many have been lucky enough to take part in such a wide variety of things. Keep your memories coming.
Just to complete our set. As I said the best two were on our last visit in 2011.
The first one when I was selected by the genial hosts of Monsters Inc. Laugh Floor to be Sulley I have already mentioned this in How did you choose your Subsonic user name. I ought to add however that the two characters were less than impressed with my scaring techniques describing me as a "Scary Moose"
That said it was great fun and I did get the opportunity to tell Sulley the next day at DHS who was much more appreciative :)
The other appearance was equally good fun and involved the whole family. We had a meal booked at the Tusker House in AK arriving a few minutes early we stopped to watch Tam Tam Congo who were just starting. After their opening number they wandered forwards and before we knew it all four of us along with another couple were performing an African dance routine. This was actually more like a ten minute gym work out right before lunch.
With our legs feeling like jelly we then had to apologise for arriving late for our lunch booking

I have never taken part of anything at Disney The closest experience that I got to do was to be chosen to participate in the Indiana Jones Stunt Show. When my section was called to ask for volunteers, I raised my hand quickly. My friend on the otherhand jumped up and down with her hand up. She was chosen for the show. I was extremely jealous. lol

That's so unlucky but hopefully your friend had a good time :) and you weren't too hard on them.
The Indiana Jones Stunt Show is something I would love to be picked for. I like the way they even have actors playing volunteers.

My son was selected to be "Gaston" in Belle's story time.
He still talks about it!
