they're distributing FPs away during EMH now? I thought they closed down the kiosks shortly before the official park closing (before EMH).

on our last trip (December 2006), they weren't giving them out during EMH. but based on your timeline, it seems they were. what's the story?

We used a rental car on our last trip, and it was a lifesaver! We visited SeaWorld during the day and then drove to AK, DHS, or Epcot. It was easy to get close parking and much faster to leave the park at close. I highly recommend driving instead of the bus, especially in the evenings. Waiting for the bus can suck so much of your vacation time.

The buses and other transportation can be nice, if you have alot of time. Otherwise, since during peak seasons you may have to wait 20 minutes and have to travel along a route that may or may not be direct, a rental car is by far the best way to go.

Day 6: Monday January 22

Yes yes yes! We were surprised to see this. What they do is time the normal public fp tickets to run out by closing time. Then at the official start of EMH they turn them on again. My wife waited in line at 6:55pm at the Rock n' Rollercoaster kiosks while I rode ToT so that she could get the passes. Having fp options during EMH turned out to be quite handy.

Day 6: Monday January 22

Since Monday night was EMH at Disney's Hollywood Studios (7p-10p) we took a day trip out to Kennedy Space Center. This is another good reason to have a rental car and the drive is an easy straight shot East on the Beeline Expressway. Or from WDW, you can take 417 on a south loop under the airport. You still hook up with Beeline but you avoid the airport congestion and the never ending roadwork between the airport and International Drive.

Anyway, I had been to Kennedy Space Center (KSC) only one other time, in the carefree days of pre-9/11 1994. Back then, I remember that the bus tour took you around the space shuttle launch pad. Nowadays, they only take you to a "gantry" observation deck about three miles from the pad. A bummer, as Atlantis was on the pad prepping for its next trip to the ISS.

Speaking of the ISS, they have this cool part of the tour where you can overlook the preparation of modules for the space station. We saw the new Japanese module "JEM" as well as the Canadian "claw" or robot hand that will go onto the mechanical arm on the station. Amazing.

KSC itself has grown up too. It's like a little theme park, replete with shows, a simulator ride (extra charge) and two IMAX theaters. If you are a Far Out Space Nut you can easily spend an entire day there. For us, the three hour bus tour was enough.

We grabbed a late lunch at the Village Inn in Titusville just north of KSC and then headed back to WDW for our final night in the magic.

After freshing up at the hotel we took the Friendship V over to DHS. I have to pause here and point out that we had the YOUNGEST crew ever on a Friendship boat. The "captain" was under 20 and the "co-captain" was about 20 and on the college program. We even talked to them about it before disembarking and they acknowledged that the Friendships are crew'd primarily by salty old men who smoke bad smelling pipes on their breaks. Funny.

Entering DHS at about 6:15, we immediately got our wristbands for EMH. We have learned this other tip: get your wristband as early as possible. Distribution begins about two hours prior to normal park close.

I was a little bummed that we didn't get there in time to see the stuntcar show - I have never seen that. Oh well, something for next time. Instead, we did the Walt Disney Story/tribute exhibits (sans movie) and then headed over to ToT. My wife does not like dropping from high places so she opted to wait at the fp kiosks for them to reopen at 7pm while I rode the Tower. I practically walked onto the ride. Again, no waiting.

At 7pm there was still a 40 minute wait for RnRC so we decided to ride in the single rider line first and come back later for a fastpass ride together. The wait for single riders was about 5 minutes. We had a great deal of luck with the single rider line during our trip as you can see.

Next we saw the Voyage of The Little Mermaid. The CM there was very nice. She asked us our names and what year anniversary we were celebrating. Then she made a special announcement during her intro spiel and everyone applauded. Finally, she escorted us to front row seats. Actually, second row, as she said the first row wasn't as good. Great special treat, even though the water effects during the show seemed especially pronounced for us (i.e. we got wet).

After the show, we rode the Great Movie Ride. The CM's did a good job here too - one was particularly good as the "gangster" who hijacks our tour.

We wrapped up the evening a bit early, a little past 9pm, with a final ride on RnRC. We were a bit hungry and wanted to get a bite back at the Boardwalk before it got too late.

Dinner was again at Big River Grille. Then a milkshake at Beaches N' Cream for dessert. A great final night at WDW.

Pedometer reading: 7.44 miles.

Day 7: Tuesday January 23

Post by horizons1 » Feb Mon 04, 2008 9:55 pm

Day 7: Tuesday January 23

Sigh. Our departure day is always one filled with melancholy. But Tuesday we had a couple of new things in store.

First, we had been given two passes to play mini golf when we checked-in at the start of our vacation. We had found no time to use these so we opted to check out the Winter Summerland course after departing the hotel. We had played the Fantasia themed course on a previous visit. This one was cute and compact, wedged into about an acre of land on the corner of the Blizzard Beach parking lot. The course is very easy, and if you have little ones I highly recommend this over the Fantasia course, which seemed a bit trickier as I remember. In fact, the Winter Summerland course had more than one hole with a natural curve of the playing surface of the green around the hole. We found that just hitting the ball in the general vicinity of the hole allowed you to sink your putt. Kinda takes the strategy out of the game.

A present for me?! Gosh, Mickey, you've already done enough.

Next up: A visit to the new home of Mouse Surplus! These guys recently moved to a new home out in the sticks not far from Cypress Gardens. You really need to map this out and just when you think you're lost, you're there. They had TONS of dresser/TV combinations removed from the remodeled All Star rooms. I don't know the price, but they had a warehouse virtually full of just hotel room furniture.

But then, the best part: PARK GOODIES:

Sea Cabs, anyone? They have two.
Image

And remember all my talk about the missing toppings bar at Epcot? Well...

We found it! Where's the cheese sauce?!
Image

Ah, closure.

And speaking of closure...

The piece de resistance...

Image

Ahhhhhhhhhhh. I am home at last!
Image

Yes, that's what you think it is. A genuine Horizons ride vehicle. I didn't ask the price, I didn't want to get depressed. But with the still intact speakers this would make a lovely addition for any game room.

Well, that was our trip. Off to the airport and back home to our lives and our very grateful dog. I hope you enjoyed the report and will find some of our experiences useful on your next vacation.

wow. that's a change. are the FPs any different (saying EMH or something like that)? I hope that this is something that is still going when I go down later this year.

Nope. They're just regular fastpasses.

How was this? It's about the only thing I'm sort of bummed I haven't seen in any of the parks.

Also that's fantastic that you found the topping bar. Closure, indeed.

By the way, that plastic seaweed is surplus from 20,000 Leagues. I imagine the stuff that was in use was kind of disgusting, so those were never used. It showed up a long time ago at Mouse Surplus and initially they were charging an arm and a leg for them. It doesn't look like it was a popular item, because the price has plummeted ever since, and they still seem overrun with it all.

It speaks to the nature of the company that initially they were going on about how extremely rare it was and how it was going fast, and if you wanted any you should buy it right away and pay a lot of money for it. I've seen them do similar things with other products, and also gotten "promises" from them (which I didn't actually take seriously) that were not kept.

Buyer beware and all that, but I guess it's still the only legit source for that kind of thing.
On the surface there is hunger and fear. Men still exercise unjust laws. They fight, tear one another to pieces. A mere few feet beneath the waves their reign ceases, their evil drowns. Here on the ocean floor is the only independence.

I'm still laughing at this comment
A yorkie. Of course, it could've been a coincidence that the little figure they left was a dog, but we suspect it was because we had the pic of our dog on the dresser. Smile
cause everyone takes a picture of their dog on vacation........?

great posts though i haven't been to Universal yet and its great to hear a side by side comparison. nice pictures too.

Sorry, just getting online after my work had this site blocked for about a week. Ack!

Captain, it's very good. Lots of pics, models, and details worth perusing. I skipped the movie because I think it was the same one playing at DCA.

Naturally. You mean everyone doesn't?!

No. They didn't have any vehicles except for a Chevy Blazer painted in Animal Kingdom graphics.

Hearing about my trip makes me so jealous. Our next trip won't be until at least 2009.

If anyone goes back anytime soon, I fit in carry-on luggage
