You know, I haven't seen this topic yet in these forums, or else I'm blind. But I know that a lot of people do go by car so I thought it would be helpful to put in a post for them that would help them plan the trip better by offering advice on everything from what to pack to road conditions on all the major highways into and out of the world. So any ideas that you guys might have post them here!

So I guess I will go first by warning people of the ongoing (and I mean by an order of a few years) construction occuring between Macon and Valdosta Georgia on Interstate 75. Very narrow condtions throughout and the truckers like to speed.

We've driven once only after 9/11 when our flights were canceled. It's pretty much a straight shot for us down I-95 and we found this site: http://www.usastar.com/i95/homepage.htm to be extremely useful.

I can't really speak for any other travel routes throughout the country, as depending on how I go, it's more-or-less a straight shot down I-95 after getting through to Charleston. Before that, it's a kind of weave through the states (down the 90 first, to the 79, to Route 19 for a bit, through to 77, a few miles on the 26, to 95.

one thing I found useful, and I know I've posted about it before (I'll see if I can find it) is this Fuel Price Calculator from AAA. you can enter in just about any car from 1998 on (for exact make/model). or, if there's not a selection, you can enter in how many miles per gallon your car gets and it'll calculate your approximate cost in gas for both 1 way and roundtrip.

New road access to Disney to open

Western Way, the new rear entrance to Walt Disney World from the new Western Beltway expressway, is set to open April 4.

The four-lane, divided boulevard will give Disney a western entrance for the first time, allowing tourists coming in via Interstate 75 to enter Central Florida on Florida's Turnpike and the Western Beltway (State Road 429), then enter Disney without ever entering Orlando or driving on Interstate 4.

The Western Beltway opened between Winter Garden and U.S. Highway 192 in Osceola County in December.

The new Disney road will come off the expressway at an interchange built by Florida's Turnpike Enterprise near Hartzog Road. Western Way will go east into Disney property, then turn south and connect with West Buena Vista Drive not far from Blizzard Beach and Disney's Animal Kingdom.

Florida's Turnpike Enterprise expects to erect signs on the turnpike and State Road 429 directing people along the new route to Disney, turnpike spokeswoman Christa Deason said. Disney also is expected to do some advertising of the new route.

Pop on over to themouseforless.com and they have something called Mickey's Mile Markers. People that have driven to WDW from various places enter information about where they stopped and which mile markers had good stuff and I guess which didn't. I never have really looked it over that much becuase it's only a 4 hour drive for me, but it seems like it'd be very useful if you're making a long drive.

I have driven to Disney World multiple times, In some ways I think its more fun then flying. Granted you will be on highways most of the time we were on I-95 the whole way there, but it is still fun to see the different states. Also enjoy the different places you stay and eat at. I would definitely bring snacks and drinks in a cooler, it really cuts down on "snack" stops and expense. I think triple A gives out "trip tics" that map out the way to your destination. And remember when all else fails stay straight on the road, most main roads don't have turn offs, lol.

Is the western way plagued by construction like the I-4 entrance? If not I might have to switch things up.

I've been on the highway to Western Way a few times (can't remember the highway number right now) and it's WONDERFUL. No traffic at all. No construction. Just a nice easy drive around the north side of the property. And, as you're heading to Disney, look off to the left (south) and you can see, off in the distance, the castle and Spaceship Earth.

AAA members can also download those from their website by putting in starting and ending points (sorta like MapQuest).

Last couple times going this way, no construction or traffic. REAL FREAKY!!! It cuts off an hour. Maybe even more if you get there around rush hour.

i am definitely changing things up the next time we go!!! the western way sounds almost too good to be true, but worth a shot if I can cut an hour off the trip.

we just took our trip this past last july, we live in the farthest northern end of california, so, for us, its like a ten hour drive. but i have relatives in riverside, ca. and to them its closer to twelve, depending on whether or not we get lost on the 210. but for us 85 percent of the trip is that long i-5 corridor, very long, very straight. but, for us, once we clear the grapevine, and start seeing those signs along the road advertising d.l and all the other fun things to do in so. cal, its all downhill. i love the trip, actually, so, cal is soooo much different from no. cal, a whole different kind of critter. even now, as a mother of three teenagers, i get that little twinge of excitement every time we visit my sister, knowing that we will come very close to driving by d.l and ill get a glimpse of the ol matterhorn, and, then, knowing that after a couple of days at my sis's house that we will be turning back and going to visit disneyland,, and, im excited to say, well be back in dec! a good thing tho, even tho i bought at least six shot glasses this past trip, i forgot my haunted mansion one!

When coming from the north-west (down I-75) I always skip I-4.

Take the Fl Turnpike to Highway 27, It's the first exit off the turnpike, down to State Road 192. Look for Sherberth Road, and take that north. That puts you on property right next to AKL/AK.

Last time (January) I went this way 27 has some construction, but it didn't really slow you down.

It allows you to avoid Orlando and I-4.
