another newbie question about meals in WDW

Our TA suggests the pre-paid dining package, but she has made some poor suggestions in the past. Frankly, we're a bit scared that we'll be limited or pay for food that we don't eat.

Has anyone done this? We have a family of four who tend to graze more than sit down for large meals when on vacation.

Thanks, experts!

The Disney Dining Plan Is Quite An Exceptional Add on.I would recommend it because you can get snacks in the middle of the day with the swipe of a card and you also get counter service and table service..i like this because you dont have to save much money for food...you can use it on souveniers or other necessities! :ariel:

If you want to experience sit-downs, then the DDP is a good deal. If your family usually only eats at counter service restarants, then maybe the DDP isn't for you. Take a look at the sit downs included on the DDP and see if there is anything there that peaks your interest.

This year they offered the DDP for FREE to Canadians staying at any Disney Resort...with my wife and 2 kids its saving us $1600.00 for the 9 day trip. We were on the DDP before and liked it so much that we were prepared to pay for it again before they came out with the free offer. I know if we were going to POOP (pay out of pocket) for our trip, I wouldn't indulge nearly as much. When you get a bill at the end of a meal for $153.88 you can just laugh and hand them your room card!!

all i suggest is that if you do the dining package.....set reservations immediately! we enjoyed having to be at a certain place for dinner. it kept us from snacking knowing we would be fed like pigs awaiting the slaughter. Next time we go we are going to purchase one less because the food is so abundant our youngest is sticking with kids meals and snacking off our leftovers (which is a huge amount!)

WDW is offering free dining from 08/26/07 - 09/22/07 if you book before 6/24/07.

From Mousesavers.com

Get FREE dining when you book a specially-priced Walt Disney World vacation package for check-ins most nights 8/26/07-9/22/07. Purchase at least 3 consecutive hotel nights at an official Walt Disney World resort, plus at least a one-day theme park ticket, and you will get a FREE dining package (one counter service meal, one table service meal and one snack, per person, per day) for the length of your stay.

Essentially you get the Magic Your Way Plus Dining package for the price of the Magic Your Way vacation package! To qualify, you must purchase a package consisting of at least a 3-night stay at an official Walt Disney World resort hotel, PLUS at least a 1-day Magic Your Way Base Ticket.

This deal saves a family of four (2 adults, two kids ages 3-9) $99.96 per day -- the cost of adding dining to a basic vacation package.

I strongly recommend that you consider buying trip insurance if you book this package, because you will be traveling during peak hurricane season. Hurricanes rarely affect Orlando, but when they do, they can seriously impact travel plans.

You must book this offer by 6/24/07. The number of packages available at this rate is limited. Suites are excluded from this offer. No group rates or other discounts apply.

be careful with that. I was told recently that if you're staying on property, all the people in the room have to have the same package (ie - dining, parkhopper option, etc) on the tickets. Can't break it up so one person has something different from everyone else...

Everyone in the room does have to be on the same package, that's correct.

It's a great deal if you enjoy Disney dining and having at least one table service meal per day. Keep in mind the cost per day covers one table service including tip and taxes, one counter including taxes and one snack including taxes. It's really a great deal. What I don't like is the age ceiling for children (9 and under). I wish they offered a "Tween" pricing structure.

(And I have to ask if your TA has offered poor advice in the past why do you return?)

Thanks for the heads up on that JS and the follow through AK. that does make it a bit different. Ah well i thought it was worth it even though my kids didn't eat alot. especially when i saw the amount of the bill from the living seas restaurant.

My DH and I have the free plan for 10 days in September. Normally, we would not spend $80 daily and take that much time eating meals every day of our trip. But, we're excited about trying new restaurants plus returning to our staples (dinner at 'Ohana, Liberty Tree, Germany, Mama Melrose, Biergarten.)

We have the free dining plan in September also. We have never tried it before but you can't beat free! We already have several reservations made including several Character Breakfasts and dinner at the Castle. I am looking forward to trying it out. One of my concerns was being able to eat all of that food but someone told me that it is not as much as it sounds. Probably as much as we would normally eat. I do like the fact of being able to spend my money on other things, such as souvenirs, rather than food.

You definately will get sick of food on this food plan. We don't normally order appetizers and desserts but they are included. At first it was great to try new things but most portions are very large and by the end of the week we were giving our desserts away or taking them with for later evening snacks.

Here is an idea that we used with the meal program. We have a 12 year old that eats like a bird. Because of her age she is considered an adult on this program. So not to waste her meal, we have her eat off the childs menu ($5.00) and we save her sit down meal which then can be combined for one of the two credit restuarants or saved for the last day that you normally dont have meal credits for. Definately ends up being more economical.

I am a travel consultant with MouseEarVacations and if you need help booking a Walt Disney World Vacation I would be most glad to help you out. On the bottom next to my signature is my toll free number. We also make ALL your ADR for you for free. I used the Dining plan 5 times and 2 of them have been with free dining. It has always been a good value to do the dining plan for us. We loved just signing the check and leaving. We also like trying the diffrent Sit Down rest. 2008 should be interesting with all the changes. They have taken out alot of the rest in Epcot's World Showcase.
