How do you get to Disney World?

We typically fly but have driven a couple of times - 12 hours to get there from where we live by driving though!

Most of the time we fly. This year (Feb actually) we will be using 3 frequent flyer free tickets! We have driven in the past. Takes 20+ hours for us. But as long as the dvd player in the car works the ride with the kids is ok.

Fly, you can't beat the 2 hour and some change time versus 24 hours of driving

we drove down there once when I was younger (like our first trip down there when I was a baby). took us a couple days because the car we were driving wasn't the best and we had to stop constantly. Since then, we've flown down and rented a car (except for when I lived in southern Georgia and Disney was about 4 hours away). And now with that Magical Express service they have now, we won't even have to rent the car next time we go down... :D

Well, since a nonstop flight is 5 full hours... I think a drive would be, oh, four-five days. So we fly.

Fly definitely. I don't think I have the patience of sitting in the car for +4 days with anyone.

Since I've lived in states that did not border Florida, then a plane was how we went, the whole 2 times I have been there

I drove down there a few times years ago, but now I fly.

I've never done a Disney cruise, but I've often wondered if Disney would be successful using one of their cruise ships to offer one way cruises to or from New York for a couple of months each year. They could offer a package with a three or four day cruise down, and a flight back (or visa versa). They could include a day in Bermuda, and/or a day on their private island. I havn't considerd all of the logistics that would be involved. So maybe it isn't practical, but that's a trip that I would enjoy.

We usually fly. I shudder at the thought of 18 hours in the car with our kids! We can barely make it to the next town without a fight! With the price of gas, it's actually cheaper to fly at this point, too.

rick2vick: what a great idea about the cruise! I've often wished they would leave from NYC.

Plane. After my family drove there for our first visit when I was about 3 years old and I threw up during the entire ride down, my mom swore she would never drive to Disney World again. And we never have.

sadly in the us the train and metro/subway system isn't very good developed. the airplane infrastructure is far better. therfore if you don't live in the vicinity of a disney resort flying is the logical choice. if you're in japan or in europe, where there is an excellent public transport system, the train would be the preferred travel option. for example: i live in a village in switzerland. to get to the euro disney resort i have the following possibilities:
  • travel by train, high speed train and the regional parisian transport system: 8 hours
  • travel to the airport (1hour), be there early (1hour), flight (90min), get to the train station(30min) transport from charles de gaulle airport to the disney resort (2hours) adds up to a total travel time of about 6 hours
so you see that travelling by train is a possible alternative in europe. it takes only 2 hours more time (you need to travel the day before the visit anyway) and doesn't cost as much as the flight.
if i go to a disney other than the one in paris i need to fly anyway, because there is no existing land connection ;) and travelling by ship takes a bit (just a bit) too long :D

I looked into the Auto Train when planning one of our trips. I liked the idea of having my own car down there without having to drive all of the way. I don't remember the exact cost, but I remember that it didn't make sense. You lose a full travel day on each end of the trip, and there is little or no cost savings. Not only that, but I would have an eight or nine hour drive just to get to the train.
