Re: Christmas 2010 Trip to WDW: POR
DAY FIVE: 12/23/2010
The Plan: POR—Day off from the parks. I was going to hit resorts and look at the Christmas Decorations. The family could do whatever they wanted or come with me. ADR: 5:00 at Boatwrights in POR.
Actual:
This was the day I was going to venture out and see some other reports based upon the recommendations made at my “Christmas at the Resorts” thread. I was in no hurry-we all slept in and laid around for awhile.
Thanks so much to everyone for their tips on where to go to see awesome Christmas displays--it really helped out!!!
I got my start at 11:00, while the rest of the family opted to stay around the resort and head to DTD for some items they wished they had purchased when we were there Sunday.
I took this from inside the monorail while waiting to go.

I took a bus to MK and I decided to monorail hop and see all those resorts. I don’t need to bore you with the details, but the GF was beautiful! I bought some gingerbread tiles to eat later. I will, however, tell you about my stop at the Poly.
Yes, you guessed it---Dole Whip!
I wandered around a little and just couldn’t resist the urge to get Snack #4 as my third cup of that pineapple goodness. (4 snacks...three Dole Whips for those keeping score at home)
I filled my cup as high as gravity and general physics would allow me and I headed to the scene of the crime.
Nobody around to take my picture, so here is the best I could do. Castle wayyyy in the background

I went out to the beach where just mere days prior, the Mayhem Marauders had enjoyed each other’s company and took lots of pictures of mindflipper
. It was much quieter for me, I’m sure, and more lonely (there was only one couple sitting in the swing). I walked around and ate and imagined all of you there with me…in spirit, I guess.
Here’s one of the (mostly) edible arrangements at the Poly. There were about 5-6...

Then, sort of sad, I hopped the monorail to the aforementioned GF and then onto the MK where I decided to catch a boat to the WL. It was the longest wait I had for transportation all week and it wasn’t terrible, just a little cold. A guy waiting in line with me asked me where in the heck I was from wearing shorts and all. I told him that I thought it was going to be warmer…
GF Lobby shots—what a beautiful place!!!

I was overwhelmed by the WL—I had never been there and it was just amazing. I took a bunch of pics there before eating at the QS place in the basement. I was going to get a burger—they looked good, but I opted for a “flatbread” (pizza), a cookie and a drink.

It was then I decided to let fate take me where it would. I went to the bus stop and decided that whatever bus came first is where I would go and then catch a bus from there to POR. The AK bus pulled up and I hopped on but then fate intervened again. The next stop we made was at the GF, so I got off there and hit the monorail to MK!
Just before pulling into the MK monorail station, we had to wait for “traffic,” but we were parked right next to where they store the Water Pageant floats, so I thought that was cool and took a picture. We held there for about 5 mins and I took a few pics of this unique “view.”
I got on the bus to POR with no problems, but here came that pesky fate again…the first stop was at POFQ, so I got off there and walked around, checking out the Christmas lights and the resort in general, then I made the short walk back to POR. On the way, the kids called to tell me that they were just finished eating and headed back. They ate at the Earl of Sandwich again.
POFQ:

This was taken of our hotel bldg from across the river:

When we got back, Mousekeeping was in our room, so we just grabbed our mugs and went to the pool for some sun. It was too cool to swim, but there were some British-accented kids in there just enjoying themselves. They must live in Antarctica to think this was acceptable to swim!
After about half an hour, we ventured back and relaxed a bit in the room. It was about 3pm.
Our beloved Steelers had one of those Thursday night games on NFL Network that we were going to miss, so we crafted a plan… The kids wanted to go see Tron, so we would take them to DTD to see that while the wife and I ran over to the Boardwalk to see the game at the ESPN Club.
Our ADR at Boatwrights was for 5:00pm and once again, we were the 1st seating of the day, so we got to hear them ring the triangle. They had some little kid do it---he was all smiles. I got the Jambalaya, which was OK, but kind of bland. I guess they would get too many complaints if it was real spicy.
This was taken right before we ate (rum and coke in the mug
). I know it’s dark, but I love how my wife is looking at me all sassy…

We stashed our leftovers in the mini-fridge and kicked our plan into high gear.
We hopped off the bus at DTD, paid for their movie, and took them to their theater and made a hasty retreat. We couldn’t resist the pull of the freshly brewed beer at the Big River Grille, so we stopped in there for a quick one before meandering down to the ESPN club which was PACKED!
We sat at some chairs in the back with no table and no waitress, which was fine because we just wanted to watch our Steelers beat up on the Panthers and drink a few. We didn’t see the whole game but we saw enough to know they were going to win, so we headed back to get the kids.
While we waited for the bus, Illuminations started:

This is where it gets ugly…
The 4 of us piled into an already crowded bus—so much so that I was in the back of the bus with Son #2 while my wife was in the very front with Son #1, all of us standing of course. About half way through I heard a commotion and I heard someone say, “here’s a bag-here—HERE!!”
This next part is not for the faint of heart—skip over to the next day if you are weak-stomached.
Yup—someone had thrown up.
It had a strange smell, unlike normal puke. My son, who had no idea what was going on in the dark bus announced that, “something smells like barbeque, Dad.” I almost peed myself I was laughing so hard.
At our next stop, which I swear was in Miami, the bus cleared out. We still had three stops to get to ours, so we had to tough it out, but not everyone could. When we did stop and the lights came on there it was---a young boy (about 4-5) had puke all on his shirt and his Mom, God bless her, had it all over her arms. It was a large amount of “protein” almost as if he just got done eating at a Brazilian Steakhouse or something… In the “pile” were undigested---unchewed (!) Skittles. I heard a voice yell, “Hey those Skittles aren’t even chewed.” I had tears in my eyes I was laughing so hard at this unreal scene, plus I was probably a little tired.
The bus driver turned around and looked back ahead, turned off the lights and kept on driving. Finally, at the next stop, he got out some sawdust looking thing and dumped it all over. Thank you, God for whatever that product was. It immediately took the smell out of the bus.
We got off a stop early and walked the rest, but we had a good chuckle at the poor kid who ate too much. My first protein incident at Disney—mental checkmark.
We finally got rid of the giggles and went to sleep—back to the parks tomorrow!
Tomorrow: Christmas Eve and my long-awaited trip to LeCellier!!

Are the edible arrangements at the Poly out for people to eat them?
Or just to look at them?
Are any of the photos of the Water Pageant floats you took from the monorail good enough to share?!
Sounds like you had a nice Christmas decorations tour ~ lots of good fortune for you on getting around too
Cool photo of the fireworks from your resort ~ only in Disney can you get a really nice photo of fireworks while waiting for a bus
Ah-ha-ha-ha! I about split my sides from laughing about the protein spill. That is a new one for sure. Poor little guy and poor crowded bus
They must use a different sprinkle mixture than they used to use on the school bus. I swear that stuff smelled almost worse than the initial smell...ick!
Rum and coke in your resort mugs...yup, you are definitely one of the mayhem marauders for sure

I know some places uses cat litter for "protein spills". They absorb the liquid and odor like it does for cat urine. Were you able to get a close enough look to tell if it was that?

Yayyyy! I am a Marauder

And, I didn't see anyone eating the arrangements and I didn't want to be the first!

I didn't really see what it was all that good--it resembled kitty litter or sawdust. It was kind of a silvery-green color and it came in a clear plastic jug. All I know is that the smell was gone instantly and I was thankful for that!!!mindflipper wrote:...and yet he could see the unchewed skittles.Amy wrote:I'm guessing he wasn't looking too closelymindflipper wrote:I know some places uses cat litter for "protein spills". Silvery-green - yep, sounds like cat litter to me. I remember decades ago when I worked in grocery store they used cat litter for "protein spills", broken glass jars, etc. because of its ability to absorb the liquid and the smell. Ever since then, so many other places have begun to use it, from Target to gas stations.
Thanks for the water pageant's secret mooring spot, H!
