Nice! Now hopefully we can manage to get a great deal on a room in one of those resorts for our next trip!

Do note that the free wi-fi is NOT in the rooms but in certain locations around the resorts.

I wonder how accessible the free wi-fi is? Does it require special password only given to resort guest? Or could a guest staying at a nearby resort pop over for a visit and connect in?

I don't know how it is in WDW but when I was at the Grand Californian Hotel lobby while waiting for a dinner reservation, I had to connect through the DISNEYLAND RESORT wifi connection and it's almost like the typical place that offers wifi. It had something pop up that asks you to agree to using the wifi/the terms then it connected me.

I had to wonder if Disney was going to only make it available to all or guests staying at the resort...

The free wifi is probably like almost every hotel chain with free wifi. As long as you're within range you can use it and most people won't run over to the hotel just to check their email. Also, always treat them like the village bike and use any safeguards you can. :D

I am always floored by what people do over free wifi/paid wifi in hotels and airports. It's fine if you want to check your email, surf the net, etc. but doing banking/shopping or anything else that uses personal info? That is just a bad idea.

There are actually safeguards you can do that will allow you to do that stuff on a free wifi and be totally secure. You just have to be smart and think ahead. Always enable private browsing and use https as opposed to http. It is by no means a fool proof system, but just in case you need to do something quickly, it can add a bit of security.

The problem is that a black hat will probably still be able to get past anything you would use. The safest thing to do with public, or any wifi that is not your normal trusted source, is to assume that everything you're doing can be viewed. Disney would probably be an even easier place to it at since people are a bit more gullible on vacation and wifi is subtle.

As a COMPUTER TECH, I can assure you that there is no such thing as a totally secure WiFi network!! A WiFi network is only as secure as your personal device. I wouldn't trust one if you paid me!! PLEASE DO NOT do you BANKING or other PERSONAL FINANCIAL business over a free WiFi network!! You could be very sadly surprised at what "FREE" can cost you!!

Indeed, on a biz trip, I once realized I forgot to do some file transfers before I had left home so I ended up having to run across the street in my bedroom atire (it was almost midnight) to the office just to make sure I was on a secure network. There have been people here that were severely dealt with when they used hotel networks.

We are actually pretty happy with the internet connections we get even when we pay for it. We just add to our budget.
