I was trying to concentrate on the tour commentary, but it sounded like the man had been guaranteed an extra spot on the tour for his wife and once they arrived, they were told the tour was capped at 13, or perhaps that his wife wasn't able to attend the tour and he didn't want to pay full price for his toddler. In any event, Disney had been trying to accommodate him and refund at least part of his money but he was definitely an unhappy camper. I'm just glad it didn't escalate further as it was getting pretty heated before he left. It made for an uncomfortable few minutes on the train for sure!
This could all have been about the fact that the tour is for ages 10 and up. Perhaps they were not allowing the 2-year old go, which meant part of the family would have had to split up.

I loved the train tour! Because of the hour the MK opened the day I took the tour we got to watch the opening show from "behind" while inside the train station! It was a cool perspective.

Great pics Amy!
I hadn't thought about the age limit. Maybe that was the whole thing and nothing to do with another person. And his wife wasn't there. Hmmm, I don't know. I'm just glad it was resolved before we got further into the tour.
That would have been great to see the opening show at the train station. We never did quite make it for rope drop, although we were technically at the MK one day for it...details on that later ;)

Awesome job Amy! I really love the pictures you got of inside the roundhouse. That building is one of the facilities that always seems to fascinate me. I definitely would have taken the train tour but getting up that early while on vacation is virtually impossible for me. Did you happen to catch any shots of the monorails above while you were there?

It's really amazing to see how clean Main St. can be at the start of the morning. The wet ground truly shows how keeping the park clean is a 24 hour operation.

The monorails were all still sleeping while we were there ;) No, actually I know there was at least the resort monorail running as I had seen it while I was taking pictures at the Contemporary and also while we were first starting our tour outside the main gates. But no monorails came in or out while we were back at the roundhouse. You better believe I would have been snapping away with the camera if I had seen one

I've had professional photographers get really mad when they ask which photo editing program I use and I tell them that I don't use one. I take my pictures and that's it. True, I've seen some great shots that are achieved through manipulating the picture in software, but I think truly beautiful pictures are the ones that are captured as they are in real life.

What did we do before Photoshop? Oh yeah... We got it right the first time. Don't get me wrong, I love Photoshop because it can rescue a really challenging image, but I think we've started to rely on it a little too heavily. Myself included. :?

I love Photoshop because it was able to take some old, old photos I have by bringing them back to life, so to speak. Use it the right way, you can make faded pictures look a lot better...

I only use photoshop to perfect images I submit to airliners.net. Everything I post on here is the raw file untouched by photo editing software. Sometimes I know I might not have an image right the first time so I retake it. With the digital age you really are not wasting any film :D

Anxiously awaiting more Amy :D

Day 3 - continued...

Right this way please...
Image

We left the HM one happy haunt shy of capacity and headed to the Riverboat. I had talked with the CM who was helping me figure out our tickets when we were figuring out the hotel problems on our first day ~ did I lose anyone yet?! ~ and he told me how that was his riverboat. Evidently he was the last of the original CMs to have worked on the riverboat. I asked him if they allowed guests to ride in the wheelhouse like they do in DL. He said it depended on who was working but generally yes, they did allow people up there. He also told me to look for his picture in the Captain's quarters. Anyhow, long story longer, I checked with several CMs, finally found out who the captain of this particular journey would be (evidently they change jobs each trip around the river) and got the green light to ride up top with Captain Dave :D
Image

He gave me lots of information and told me quite a lot about his different roles with the company. He also knew of our very own packwingfan, and had just eaten lunch with someone I am a friend with on facebook that works primarily in the HM. Unfortunately that is the closest I got to seeing either packwingfan or Ashley in person on this trip :(

Lots of people in the park today!
Image

So, what did I learn on my trip around the Rivers of America? The Riverboat is running on it's second backup generator and that is why it is shut down at dusk. If the generator would happen to go out while the boat was out on the rivers, it would have power to return to the dock, but no lights. And no lights + 100's of frightened guests evidently doesn't = something Disney wants to take on  The hull is going to be fixed in January and BTMRR is going down for a complete refurb (pretty much of a total rebuilding of the attraction and queue) once the new Fantasyland is up and running. He said the riverboat and treehouse are both on the chopping block if the park needs to save money. The riverboat uses 1000 gallons of diesel a day to generate the steam and the parts are very hard to find replacements for anymore. Those are two of the reasons it is at the top of attractions that would go if necessary. Dave said one of the rumors floating around is an expansion of the Jungle Cruise if the treehouse gets axed. I wouldn't think that would happen anytime in the near future since they just finished the refurb on the treehouse. I had told Captain Dave about the picture I was supposed to look for and he helped me find it on the way out.
It was up on a really high shelf, and I am not all that tall so forgive the slightly blurry, reflectiony photo...
Image

I picked up F1gment on the bottom deck and we headed off to Cosmic Rays for lunch. We had to skirt the parade crowds along the way.

Hi Mickey!
Image

Now I had quite the frustrating time at Cosmic Ray's last year when we were there. Mom wanted one sort of food, I wanted another, tables were scarce and lines were long. I had to stand in one line forever, get her food, battle the crowds with a tray of precariously balanced food and a drink, deliver it to her at the table, then stand in another horrendously long line and repeat the process all over. This time around we ended up parking her ECV outside and walked in with more or less the same plan this year, find a table, set her down and I would go to find food. But this time we were going to share something so I didn't have to stand in line twice. Evidently Disney must have been hearing about the problems of finding tables and had CMs standing outside the inner dining room, the one with Cosmic Ray, who would help you find a table. The only problem is, you have to have your food first before they will seat you  So, same problem exists, I would still have to battle the crowds while balancing food and drinks, but this time, F1gment was not already perched comfortably at a table. And she had nowhere to sit while I stood in the horribly long food line. No good. We actually lucked out as we were heading toward the exit, we snagged a table right by one of the food counter lines. Those tables in the upper seating area are first come first served. I saw it the same time as another lady and proud or not, I beat her to it!
We ate our lunch and then snuck in the exit door in order to get a photo of Cosmic Ray. There was no other way to get to see him! You can't go in that room, at least not while we were there, unless you. have. food. We weren't seen sneaking in, we were in stealth mode  ;) although once we entered their field of vision, the two CMs looked like they were going to say something to us, but they wisely kept their distance while I snapped a few shots. I figured they decided we were no threat and didn't have any food so we weren't going to take up any valuable table real estate. It might have been the expression on my face though  In any case, it just wasn't the same as being able to sit and take in the corny show...sigh. And I didn't get any really good pictures darn it all :(

Hi Sonny! Maybe next time we can manage to catch your show...
Image

After lunch we got a fastpass for Buzz Lightyear and took in the sights of Tomorrowland on the TTA. It was far too busy to go around twice :(

We had to take a photo of F1gment with her favorite Pixie's balloon self...
Image

We had to wait 15 minutes for our Buzz FP time. F1gment kept up her tradition of letting me win ;) 98,100 to 25,200. Not my best score by a long shot...eh.

Concentration faces ~ check!
Image

I went to Stitch while she waited outside. She never liked Alien Encounter and has never had the inclination to see Stitch since. It was sort of drizzly anyhow so she was happy sitting under the overhang staying dry and watching the poncho parade begin
After Stitch we decided to head back to the room to get a quick drink and snack from the food court and get ready to meet up with NaCler and his Momma later that evening. Yay!

Saw this on the resort tv while we were eating our quick snack. I never did get a chance to see the Duffy bedtime story :( Or more importantly, tape it so I could share it with Subsonic

We made it back to the bus stop right about 5 and caught a bus right away. There was the cutest Japanese family on the bus with three little boys. Sadly I did not muster the courage to strike up a conversation as my Japanese is very rusty but we had fun playing peek-a-boo with the youngens and ended up seeing them on the buses a few more times with lots of smiles to go around :D
We made it to DHS at 5:20 and headed right back to the Fantasmic ampitheater to claim our seats. I got ahold of NaCler to let him know where we were seated. If you have read his report then you know it sprinkled just long enough for his Mom to purchase a poncho, then it cleared off and was quite a nice evening. He brought me a nice Vinylmation to add to my collection of... one VM
It was a green thumb VM and he guarded my toothbrush and sunscreen in the hotel room the rest of the trip. Why my toothbrush and sunscreen you ask? Well, he had to do something to earn his way back to Michigan and we didn't have any plants for him to tend to  ;)
NaCler, his Momma, F1gment and I had a bit of time before the show to catch up on what all had happened since we had seen each other last December, and then we took in a fantastic Fantasmic!

F1gment's favorite fairy...
Image

It looks like they painted the grey bottom of the "riverboat" since last Christmas :D
Image
Image

After Fantasmic ended we got out of the theater in record time with having 2 extra people to back F1gment up and join the traffic fray! NaCler and I then took a drop on Tower of Terror...
Image

NaCler and his Momma headed toward the Osborne lights while F1gment and I headed for some dinner. We then headed toward the Great Movie ride and got the gangster scene...again. We did ask about the Western scene and were told that they generally run a few of those shows, but only during mid-day. So basically, if you would like to see the Western scene, you have to ask and be prepared to hear no, we aren't running it, or come back at such and such time. Unfortunately we never made it at the right time for the Western scene this trip. Something for next time I suppose...

Image
Image
Image

We got out of the Great Movie Ride about 8:10 and the park had closed at 8 so we were prepared to leave. But NaCler had texted that there was no one down at the lights and we should come on down. So we did and he was right, it was pretty empty. They didn't realize we were coming or they would have waited for us. As it was, I spent some time looking for the purple cat with some clues from a texting NaCler. It ended up being great fun as a family of three was also looking and we ended up working together, although I spotted it first  The couple I was hunting with also told me about the all white angel and razorback hog in honor of Jennings Osborne's passing this year. The lights went off promptly at 9 pm after a last dance. I suppose that is the only way to get people out of there. No one will leave if the lights are on and there is something to look at

I love that they included this lovely nativity scene this year...I don't remember seeing it last year.
Image

Alley cat...darn near impossible to get a clear shot of this year!
Image
Image
Image
Image

This couple was dancing away to the music...
Image
Image

There were some lights out this year that were pretty noticible...but I still like these elves. This is the first time I noticed the subway doesn't go down very far
Image

The CMs almost outnumbered the guests by close to closing at 9 pm...
Image

On the way out, I saw this family trying to take pictures of their kids with the Minnie dancers. It was sort of funny as they were almost yelling at the kids to get precisely in sync with the Minnies in the window. I'm not sure what country they were from, but they took their pictures seriously  I only caught the one girl up there but at one point there were at least 3 or 4 girls up on the ledge.
Image

I think we saw more water drawings this trip than ever before!
Image

Does anyone know if they water the trees from underneath here at DHS? Every night we headed for the bus, you could hear the hiss of water and there was just a bit of water around the drains by the trees. The mats surrounding the trees were wet as well.
Image

We made good time getting back to the bus and caught one right away. Since we were back early I ran and got some drinks in our refillable mugs at the food court before we called it a night.

Lucky money: a penny in the Magic Kingdom hub right when I found F1gment after the Dream Along with Mickey show.
Trip lucky money count: 8 cents and one smushed penny

Today ended up being a warm day at 81 and a low of 63. We certainly couldn't complain about the weather so far!

- I love the ToT pic!
- The manger scene is always at the Spectacle as I have pictures of it from the last couple of years. It's always tucked away in the back so you may have missed it last year.
- thanks for the info on the Razorback and white angel, I had no idea.
- Don't be too depressed about missing the Western scene on the GMR. I saw it last year and was very disappointed. Since you are the first car it is a faster scene. Basically, a couple of people yell then the bank blows up, that's it. The gangster scene is much better.
- Again, thank you to you and your mom for being so wonderful with us for the short time we had together. Hopefully we will have even more time next meetup!

I love what you guys do to the faces of extra people who are caught in your photos. I know it's necessary, but it's also comical to see their faces all swirled up. :-)

I wouldn't be surprised if there's a soaker hose of some sort underneath the mat. It would keep the water where it's most needed, reduce waste due to evaporation, and keep unsuspecting park guests from getting an involuntary shower.

Love your report and pics Amy!!! I'm super upset to hear they are even talking about axing the treehouse?!?!?! Like you said, hopefully not anytime soon since they just gave it a refurb?! The riverboat is a classic too. I wonder what they would put in it's place? Or would they just leave the river empty?! Too bad they can't come up with an alternative.

That's great that you and NaCler got to meet up and catch up!!!

Keep the report and pics. coming!!! :D

1,000 gallons of diesel is a lot of fuel, and a lot of carbon dioxide... They should think about (and maybe they already do this) collecting all the waste oil around the park and setting up their own biodiesel manufacturing site, then use the biodiesel in their buses, boats, anything with a diesel engine. It takes a little bit of investment and they'd have to change / monitor the seals and gaskets on the engines because biodiesel is a better solvent than petroleum-based diesel, but it would be both economical and environmentally friendly. Still produces carbon dioxide, but it's not a net increase because the vegetable oils come from plants that remove CO2 from the atmosphere in the first place. Not to mention keeping the oil out of landfill / expensive disposal.
