We were thinking of taking the auto train, too, but it was somewhere in the 1000+ range, and I don't think that was for a sleeper car, either! Not cheap!

We used to drive to save money, but recently started flying. We decided that it was worth the money to have the extra time at the World and not to arrive somewhat exhausted. The drive wasn't that bad, spread out across two days, but you can't beat two and a half hours in a plane. The worst part is when you realize that your vacation is almost over and you have the drive home ahead of you.

On the subject of the Autotrain, my Dad tried it once and they did some damage to the underside of his car when they secured it. They paid for it eventually, but Amtrak gave him a big hassle and tried to claim it was not their fault.
He said that even without the issue of the damage to his car, he would not do the Autotrain again. Too much time wasted and no real savings.

That almost resembles my flight. We always take red-eyes and do activities the day we get there.spaulo wrote:Heh, girlfriend and I are getting on a 10:50pm 5-hour flight across three time zones... we'll get in around 7am and will head straight to Epcot when it opens! Talk about a long day!

I usually fly to Walt Disney World but we have, as a family, have driven to Walt Disney World twice. From Rhode Island, it takes about a day or two. It was fun but it would take too long that I would just literally JUMP out of my car seat once we arrived in Disney. hehe
I know this is probably your first flight...and it's mine too...ha, ha

We drove down twice with the camper and stayed at Fort Wilderness, Once took the auto Train with my Uncle(my uncle works for Amtrak). And now we Fly down for time sake.
When I was a kid I didn't like to drive down, it was boring and we had problems of all sorts on the way down, broken axle on the camper, watered down Gasoline in GA, etc. But we loved it when we were down there. When I have the money I will do it again with a new trailer, maybe a fifth wheel.

Done them all... plane, train, and automobiles.
We usually take the AutoTrain down. Its a nice alternative if you do not like to fly ( like my wife) and feel the drive is too long. We get the sleeper. Its not the cheap alternative, actually is pretty pricey. We have never had any issues and have taken the train many times.
For our next trip down, in April 06 we are renting an RV. I'll let you know how that goes.
