If HK works then I think they can make it happen. And keep in mind HK is starting out like the orignal more - small with growth potential... But it needs to be done right, I hope they are consulting with the Tokyo folks heavily on their projects!

It's back in the news, this week the local [Shanghai] papers are reporting Disney is officially talking about their talks. Not much we haven't seen before but this is the first time they are admitting to looking at Shanghai...

I think that the strategy behind Hong Kong Disneyland is misunderstood by many people.
Theme-park visitors (especially us hardcore Disney fans) tend to rate parks by how many new and original rides they contain. We get slightly bummed when a new park (like DCA) is filled with rides that we have already been on in WDW.
However, to the citizens of China, the perspective is very different. Millions of people live in China and will probably never have the means to travel to DisneyWorld or Disneyland (or even Tokyo Disneyland Resort). For this reason, repeat rides might be exactly what the doctor ordered.
After all, if you were living in mainland China and HKDL was the ONLY park you would ever visit, would you want it to contain 12 rides that are already elsewhere in the world or 8 new attractions? You can't tell the difference, so 12 would probably be better.
That being said, 12 rides still isn't enough. But that is another rant entirely. The less affluent the market Disney is catering to, the less likely they will ever SEE another resort. So, while original rides are CRITICAL for Disneyland, Disney World, Tokyo and Paris, local parks in China may not be judged according to the same standard.
Ok, I am done with my soapbox now.

AP is reporting today that the mayor of Shanghai is very serious about getting Disney into their city and states how much they want to have their own park. They also report on how HKDL has been at capacity and the demand for a second resort in China could be high already. Sounds like they are already getting serious over there - another interesting front to watch...
