I'm partial to Fort Pulaski, in Georgia, on the way out to Tybee Island (The Island that you can see south of Hilton Head - only problem is you have to go inland quite a bit and loop around, rather than just crossing over from island to island). Savannah itself can be interesting, depending on what interests your group. There's also Juliette Gordon Low birthplace in the historic district of Savannah (the founder of the Girl Scouts). Guess it all depends what you like!

You might also consider heading north to Charleston, SC. Maybe about 100 miles, give or take (keep in mind that Tybee Island, or Savannah, is gonna be about an hour). I can't recommend anything specific in Charleston but people seem to like it! I'm much more familiar with Savannah, so drop me a PM if you need anything specific.

One last thought - whether on Hilton Head, or in Savannah, check out Mellow Mushroom Pizza - great stuff, fun atmosphere, great beer list for the grown-ups. I'm not affiliated, but I probably should be, given the amount of pizza that we've devoured!

What kind of pizza do they have? New York floppy style, Chicago deep dish, yummy authentic Italian cheese??

Mellow Mushroom is more New York than anything else. Crust is VERY GOOD. Toppings are neat. They have a Caesar Salad Pizza that is topped with - wait for it - a Caesar Salad!

I didn't read this quite right the first time. I thought it said a Caesar salad topped with caesar salad

And I was thinking, how can you tell where the salad ends and the topping begins

Then I saw the pizza part

There was a Washington Post article, June 1, by Jane Touzalin, that discusses things to do on/at/near Hilton Head. Mainly outdoor, nature type stuff. Article title was The Impulsive Traveler: The nature of Hilton Head Island, SC. Opening line talks about Fiddler Crabs!
