How tragic! Seems like incompetence and carelessness are not limited to the Monorail management at WDW. Poor guy....

Because it's cheaper.

I'm surprised they don't have a tag system in place that makes it so that the operator knows the ride cannot be started.

Very true. I am shocked that Disney doesn't have a marker system in place to alert people if there is somebody in a place where they can be injured if the ride were to be turned on.

Also he was not a CM, but a subcontractor. Should be an interesting story to watch unfold.

There is a thing in maintenance called Lockout, Tagout. I just don't think Disney uses this procedure for cleaning. It's sad that it seems Disney thinks it's cheaper to pay a claim then to train the CM's correctly!

"The 53-year-old employee of a park subcontractor was severely injured while working on the "It's A Small World" attraction and taken by helicopter to a hospital where he died."

He wasn't actually a CM. He was contract cleaner. Not that it makes a difference.

I would imagine they use the standard warnings that they use here and in japan (vocal alerts that inform everyone the mechaninsm/s are being started), so it could have also simply been an accident and the person didn't realize the force/danger they were about to encounter.
