Wow, I really had no idea that HK Disney was doing so badly. It makes sense to have a Disney park in a place where people would be VERY unlikely to get to the two parks in the US or the one in Europe, but I am not sure that HK was really the best idea.

It will be really interesting to see if it does fail, and if so, what is going to happen. That really is very sad though.

I wasn't aware that HKDL of it doing badly, and I gather it's expansion is already under way.

I think figmentaholic might have been reading through the old parts of this thread. From all reports lately, HKDL is doing pretty well...

I think the expansion plans for HKDL are interesting as it will create areas so unique to that park that can't be found in other MK parks around the globe...

Honestly, the Asian parks, I have zero interest in visiting. I'm surprised Disney is even venturing in Shanghai, really.

So HKDL's hardship doesn't surprise me.

I don't think HKDL is suffering as badly as people think it is. China's economy is pretty robust at the moment.

I was listening to NPR (wow I am old) on the radio yesterday on the way to work and they were saying there is a huge water crisis in China right now, they are trying to find ways to lessen water, and one BIG contribution is the water from toilets, which can be half the water a family uses.

So that makes me wonder, how is that affecting Hong Kong? I know they are not a part of China any more but they are in the same general area and would be affected as well I would think.

Hong Kong is under Chinese rule after the British turned it over to them. However, as far as utilties go, I think Hong Kong is still pretty much independent of the Chinese mainland.

Honestly, I think that they shouldn't make one in Shanghai. Instead, they should use the money to expand HKDL. I mean why does people still get to have a DL in Shanghai where they don't follow the rules. They should actually get a punishment for that.

The space available at the HKDL site is limited and really able to only house one park. And BTW they are working on expansions to that park with two new areas. Shanghai's park will be different format of a park altogether, but as of now Disney is keeping the exact details to themselves.

I would actually like to visit all Disney theme parks around the world...even when they open Shanghai. (After seeing how their castle is going to be...wow!) The suits at the D23 Expo were pretty tight lipped on the park as a whole, and the one model that was present in the Parks and Resorts pavilion was so miniscule that the only true detail that could be seen was the castle. their castle will be the first of its kind in that a) it will not be based on just one character, but be a combination of several characters (i.e. Belle, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty...etc) and b) there will actually be an attraction (at least part of one anyway) inside the castle.

Anyway, this topic is about HKDL...I haven't heard how they are doing...hopefully better. I would like to go someday even if it's a small park. The pictures of the castle with the mountain behind it are amazing!

I haven't seen anything about the Shanghai park at all yet. It does sound like the castle will be cool based on your description MmeLeota.
The other parks around the world definitely have some amazing backdrops for the parks. Nothing like seeing real mountains behind the Disney mountains!

The mountain range surrounds HKDL so it does impact on its ability to expand...

...which is why I was surprised when they announced the 2 new lands. I didn't think there was enough space, but apparently there is.

Once I get the opportunity to keep going through the pictures and work on the report I will post the few pics of Shanghai that I have.

The new expansions are not that large, and HKDL is like DLR in the respect it tries to be more compact. The Gulch area I thought would be an expansion to current Fronteirland (both really have the same visual theme). I never got to see where Mystic Point would go.
