With all the cut backs and layoffs going on at the parks, I think adding another park would be just plain ridiculous! Surely someone with in Disney has 1/2 a brain to see the state of the economy out there in the whole world not just the US and until things turn around, just say NO!

Well, they can't afford to just stop working...they're looking ahead years from now. Construction won't even start for years...anyway, I think a part in Shanghai would be nice; if for no other reason than to see what a Disney park would be like built from the grounds up with Disney AND Pixar.

They wouldn't "stop" working, there is plenty of work to be done in the existing parks. There is such a thing as spread to thin and I think Disney is doing this already. The parks need some major TLC and I don't think adding a new park, no matter where in the world it's going to be is a good idea.

It's kinda like when you make a movie and you think you need a billion and one squels because they "might" pull in big bucks......well, you can't keep building parks all over the place because you think they will bring in big bucks either. What makes Disney special is that there aren't tons of parks all over the place. By continuing to add parks I think (and this is just my opinion) that it dilutes the magic in someway.

Not sure all of that made sense, cause it's 2:44am and I really should be in bed  and NOT on SR.....ha ha ha

lol; know how that late night/early morning thing goes!

I agree that WDW in particular is in need of some major TLC. As a tourist destination in competition with some very big and growing resorts, it can't afford to be stagnant or not have new things in the pipe, which it is right now. Disneyland gets a bit of slack because A.) It's got a huge local following; people will go regardless and B.) It's a bit of an icon; there's only so much you can rip out without destroying history and C.) There's just not a whole lot of ROOM for new things. The only significant bit of underused land is the whole plot that Autopia is on...it's gigantic, and only has that little ride there. Of course, the Subs show building is underneath, but still, if they decided to expand a bit, the land could be used there.

And we all know that DCA is getting some major work done right now.

Is Disneyland Shanghai going to be designed and run by Disney, or will it be sort of like Tokyo Disney and DisneySea, where it's run by a different group of people, hence the drastic difference in execution and quality?

If I remember correctly when I was reading about it, Disney Shanghai is actually going to be run by Disney, not leased like Tokyo Disney. I will look around and see if I can find that article I was reading.

I know there is a group of loyal locals to WDW as well, but I am guessing that since there are more parks and an a smaller loyal local group, I guess they are a bit less noticable.
I know, I was one of those loyal locals when I was there.

But I do hope this "are you 23" thing has to do with something new at WDW. It is about timw for something big and new.. AK is what... 10-15 years old now?

Disney Shanghai? I'm still trying to rap this one around my head. I can understand why Disney would want to build there. It's a very large untapped market and even though Hong Kong Disney is so close, I think China has travel restriction in place to Hong Kong. It's amazing that Disney is building in such a restrictive place. I'd like to see what they leaving out to satisfy the Chines government.

About it being Disney ran opposed to being ran like Tokyo Disney. From all reports Tokyo Disney is the best park anywhere.

^^ That's what I've heard too. I think it has to do with the management.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see. I'm sure Disney knows more than we do if it's still going ahead with it.

I think it's interesting, a big free market corp like Disney would be allowed to go to mainland China. The Chairman just might lose control of the ranks once they get a big dose of Disney. They'll never be able to turn back the tide!

They already have a Disnayland in Hong Kong, so the damage is done. And besides China isn't exactly the pillar of Communism anymore, they are basically a rudimentary free market with strict government control. Now that strick government control only pertains to the actions of the people not the quality of the business'. But I should probably stop before this gets political.........to late but still.

Just mentioning China is a political statement. Oh yea, you are right on with your statement!

China bent over backwards to get Disney to build Hong Kong Disneyland, and from most news reports it appears they're willing to do whatever it takes to get one in Shanghai. China over the last decade has been working hard to become a tourist destination. And after the Olympics, maybe they will be competition for European destinations...

Someone at last years stockholders meeting asked the question, "would Walt Disney have concidered building a Disney Park in a communist country," and now there are going to be 2 of them. I don't know if it's a valid point, but it was something that I had never concidered myself until I heard that question. I know that business doesn't respect politics unless it affects the bottom line, so to speak, but, I do wonder if Walt Disney would have agreed to this.

What more worries me is this: China's economy is in a big boom right now, so Disney is excited to build the 2 theme parks over there now. But as the housing boom over here has taught us: booms don't last forever. The housing boom was built on poorly secured sub-prime loans which did in the market. China's boom is based on an incredible growth in real estate and construction - how can it sustain that year after year? It can't, and eventually that boom's bubble is going to burst. And when it does, and China's economy goes through a dry spell - how will those 2 Disney parks over there do then? Tourism and theme-parks are the first to suffer in a bad economy.
