Subsonic on your phone!! Yes your phone!

Post by future-imagineer » May Sat 14, 2005 5:15 pm

I recently purchased a Treo 650 from Sprint with unlimited internet access. While looking for software to add to it, I came accross Pocket Tunes Deluxe. At first I thought it was just "another" MP3 player, but to my surprize it does streaming audio. While it can stream from many sites, it works the best with shoutcast. Being a Disney Fanatic (yes the tunes of Disney World calm me down & excite me at the same time!) I searched for "Disney World" and found Subsonic.

After a little trial and error, I came to the resolution that the 24k stream is perfect for my phone & ptunes! (I've been listening for over an hour now & not one buffering pause!) To boot, I get the song titles (live365.com doesn't do that!)

I probably shouldn't have pointed this out, as the 24k stream will probably be overloaded with others trying this!

Thank you Subsonic!!

Err, doesn't doing this cost a lot?

Well I'm already paying a pretty penny for phone service (the internet access only costs $15 a month for unlimited!)

To answer your question, it costs no more than I would be paying already (not including the software which was less than $30).

I should note, the ONLY problem with what I am doing stops incomming calls from coming in... but heck, if I'm listening to my Disney Tunes... you'll have to leave a message on my voicemail (as it goes directly to voicemail when the phone is sending or receiving data).

Yeah if anyone does that on a 24k please keep it to a minimum... some of us can only use 24k on the computer.

Oh yeah... I forgot that there are still people with 33k modems (my phone actually goes up to 144k, but for 100% constant stream I need to use the smaller bandwidth.)

It's not that, I have a 56k modem but I do like to do other things while I listen. Also I recieve alot of buffer time on a 24k connection, imagine what the 56k would do.

Congrats on your phone. That is cool. I posted a few weeks ago where I was listening to Subsonic Radio in Disneyland on my Treo 650 with Pocket Tunes... Good stuff!

Will wonders never cease. Cool that you can take Subsonic Radio anywhere you want. I'm still stuck with this here desktop.

Which relay do you currently run? Becuase currently percentage wise the 24k stream is the least crowded. Personally I have never seen it above 7/10. IMHO if you are running a more crowded stream like the 56k stream, you should probably stay. Thanks for offering. But you obviously have been around here more than I have and I'll let you decide which stream to run.

we have 2 other relays for the 64 k and I see the 24k full all the time I'll keep both of them. I have now added a 7 slots on the 24 k stream and i have kept my 4 on the 64k Enjoy

Next playing Subsonic Radio on a laptop in the Park this is the coolest thing. I'm amazed how people find ways to listen to the station. Keep it up
What's the quality like? I can't imagine a phone sounding good.

It's getting closer and closer to needing to pay for more streams. So far other than paying for DSL and buying a dedicated machine running this site hasn't cost me anything. Hmmm...

maybe it's about time to ask some more people to become Relays for the site. For those who want to help out the site you love so much, please click the link above or click this one. You'll learn a little about runing the relay, and get the link for the .zip file to download.
