'Extinct Attraction' Videos- Haunted Mansion

Post by ronatie » Oct Mon 04, 2010 3:44 pm

I would imagine that at least a few of you on here, have seen and maybe own a few of the "Extinct Attraction" videos. They're well made and fun to watch. Last I heard, they were discontinued due to some legal trouble. I used to have the ORIGINAL version of the video he made about the Haunted Mansion. After a few views, the DVD crapped out on me and stopped working. I pestered him about it and after a few months, he sent me a new one. The new version had been re-mixed, re-edited and frankly, over-cooked. It was not as good or as watchable as the original version and that's all I really wanted. SO I'm asking if anyone on this site has this video and is willing to sell/trade/give me a copy. Send me a message.

Is that the guy who just settled with Disney to the terms that if he ever violates their copyrights again he will have to pay one million over ten years?

I agree that the remixed DVD is "over-cooked". It lost something. I actually found the revised version iritating. The original was better.

As far as any lawsuit, I have not heard anything like that concering Extinct Attractions. Heck, Roy Disney himself did a DVD with them! It didn't seem like Diz had any problems with them as a non-profit charitable organization in the past...

I think it's the same guy, here's a link to the court documents (got to love public record). Apparently Disney did not seem to agree with his claims of being a charity.

It appears you're right - the extinctattractions.com website is down (it directs you to another home face page, but the shop option is disabled)...

Thanks for posting that link Wizzard. I had been following that thread for quite some time, but forgot to check on it recently. I used to think he was truly helping the community and that he had the backing of Disney (or at least the folks that appeared on his DVDs). Makes me sick....

Oddly enough, it looks like the theme-park documentaries weren't listed as much as when he did those TV specials on DVD, Captain Eo material, or the CD's of music. Also the use of certain logos. Maybe he should had just stuck to his original idea of the documentaries and left it at that?

I had looked up the whole story with the guy (since I only heard about it a few weeks ago) and apparently he lied to a lot of people (some of whom apparently thought he was going to pay them for services rendered). I am going to guess Disney never gave him blessings since they already have an archivist and he was selling the stuff. If he would have not sold the products at all he would have probably stayed off the radars of Disney, he might still have gotten into some trouble since it also sounded like he violated copyrights by adding in segments from various television programs and movies. He is very fortunate that he isn't either filing for bankruptcy or doing time.

If you haven't been to mousebits.com you might want to check them out. One of the admin makes indepth documentaries about various attractions, I did not know it was possible to get almost 3 hours worth of material (after editing) on just "The Land".

Thanks for the tip Wizzard. I haven't heard about this "Extinct Attractions" thing at all. And I would be interested in seeing some in-depth documentaries for sure :D

Disney does have an archivist (who BTW just retired) but the Disney Archives does not do documentaries or sell anything. The archive just seems basically an internal department which supports other areas of Disney.

Extinct Attractions has been around for maaaaaaaaany years, so Disney has been aware of it for a long time. Roy Disney himself did an interview for one of the DVD's! I think as he expanded he crossed the line, and that brought down their wrath. So far, nothing I can see tells me if Disney is trying to shut him down, or clip his wings. It will be interesting to see what "settlement" they reach in the end...

I appreciate all the insight guys but that brings me back to my original question: Does anyone have a copy of the original version of the Haunted Mansion Video they'd be willing to share/sell/trade? Let me know.

I think the settlement is that he won't do it again, which is why it didn't go to trial, and he will have to pay his own legal fees.

While we may all want to know everything about the rides, they are disney's IP and can choose when, if ever, to release content.
