You click on "PROFILE" in the menu bar at the top of the page, that will open your profile for editing. At the bottom of the profile page, you can enter a web address for an avatar.

I just realized the FAQ is useless for how to actually get an avatar.
In your profile section at the bottom there's this text:
Link to off-site Avatar:
Enter the URL of the location containing the Avatar image you wish to link to.
It's exactly that.
You put in a link to an image from another website. Like this:
http://partyoptions.net/clips/themepagetext/mickey1.jpg
Unfortunately, Internet Explorer is a piece of poop and doesn't have the "Copy image location" in the right click like
FireFox has.
With IE, you'll need to right click, choose properties, and copy where is says "Address (url)"
Once you have a link to an image copied, put it into the field in profile.

Ooh very festive and 50th anniversary-ish. But yeah I can't read the text and the head looks a bit stretched.

I am new myself and tring to find my way. Go to a wed site find a pix and click then right click. Go down to the bottom and find properties and click. A general box will open and discribe the jpeg, highlight and copy. Go back to your profile down to the bottom to the avatar control and paste the address in the avatar box. This worked for me..

yes, that's how to do it (the best way anyways, unless you save the picture and upload to something like photobucket).
