Poll: Should SR limit the amount of requests made in a row?

It's been bothering me for quite some time now. Something I call, Playlist Domination. This is when a user with a lot of posts can request up to several hours at a time. When I instituted the point system, I knew this time would come.

Does anybody have a problem with this?

I have thought for a while what would be the best and easiest way to handle this. If this is too much of a problem, then the solution I have come up with is to limit the amount of time a user can have in the queue/playing to an hour. This would mean a user can request as many songs as they like as long as they don't exceed an hour of time total. This would give other users the ability to add their requests in. I'll give some examples:

A user requests an hour track, they can't request another track until after that hour track has been played.

A user requests 6 ten minute tracks. Once one of those 10 minute tracks have played, they can immediately request another 10 minute track.

The only drawback, is if there's a bunch of songs in the queue, a user requests an hour long track, he/she has to wait that duration for those tracks AND their track to request something again.

So, is Playlist Domination a problem or not? Should we limit the amount of requests a user can make at a time?

sounds like a fine solution to me.

I, for one, would appreciate this sort of restriction.

The system is fine the way it is. Please leave it alone. :D

As one of the many-points users on the forums, I have to cast a self-preserving "no" vote. However, I don't really have a good reason why, and think these changes probably will be implemented, and that it won't negatively affect my enjoyment of the station.

Works for me. I used to get frustrated and just not request anything when I saw the queue was longer than I had. Of course, now I'm on at 5am so it's not as much of an issue.

Let me help you with why it's unfair. Its unfair because if I'm a good user and I post on the forums and contribute to the community, I get rewarded with points but I can't use the points because im restricted to be "equal" with some schmo who just joined the site and who lurks and contributes nothing.

Not quite. A veteran user can still request many more tracks in a 24 hour period than a new user can. The restriction doesn't equalize all users because the veteran users can still use their points, just not all in a row.

i think this is a great idea!

when i see there's a huge block of tracks, maybe just from one or two users, i tend to not listen and to not request since by the time my requests are played, it's been hours and i might not be at the computer or i might forget they're going to play...

I think it's a good idea if the queue is already long. If the queue is empty, then I think it's okay to request multiple tracks. (I'm not sure if it possible to distinguish between an empty queue and a queue that's not empty when programming this.)

Overall, I think this site is great. Subsonic has done a wonderful job in the way this website is organized.

Agreed! I wince when I see that the queue is very long so I go to listen to the Backgrounds section until the queue requests are completed.

I for one would welcome it. I try to limit my request time to 30-40 min's max. Just because I have tons of points from contributing in the forums doesn't mean I need to hog the request time. Since it's real time, part of the enjoyment of this site is getting to choose something you would like to hear, but if you have to wait hours because 1 person has tied up the requests for that long, it makes for a pretty sad day.

I think it would also discourage new listeners who might think "why should I contribute since it looks like I wouldn't have a chance to request due to someone tieing up the time", and Joe Schmo has a million points :P (now that's a goal within itself!)

I know that not every one likes what I request, just as there are times that someone has tied up the requests for way over an hour with stuff I don't necessarily enjoy hearing, at that point I sign off and listen to my actual radio in the office YUCK!! And I hate mainstream radio

I think limiting would help everyone be able to listen to their choices. Some folks just can't be in the forums and post like a lot of us. I know that my work load has increased tremendously so I can't contribute in the forums like I have in the past. So it's not fair to punish those who don't post. Some times people are too nervous and not as out going and aren't comfortable posting. That doesn't mean that they don't enjoy Subsonic. Besides non-posters only have a few points and can't request long tracks, but at least they might be able to request something they like. I know that I have NEVER posted on any site before this one! It was a scary thing for me to do. As you can see I am way over that now

Ok, off my soapbox :D

Those are just my opinions and I respect them very highly...ha ha ha

Thanks!
