Searching by point cost?

Post by casrin » Jul Mon 30, 2007 9:22 am

Would it be possible to enable it so that when we're searching for songs to request, we can also search by the point cost?

I'm thinking how a database works... and what I'm thinking of are the times when you're down to 50 or so points left that you can request with and trying to find songs/sounds that are in that point range.

I don't know how the software works that runs Subsonic and I don't know software and databases at all in this sense to know if that's even do-able. But if it is, I think that'd be cool to be able to click on the point cost in order to see what's available.

Since I might not even be making sense, let me give a little example. Over on the site where I role-play, if you click here (http://p099.ezboard.com/The-Gungan-Coun ... tsUserLink) you can see the member list. If you click on "Total Posts" at the top right of the table, it shifts the member list into numerical order from the person with the highest post count on down to the lowest.

That's what I'm asking for (or if its possible to do) here for the song requests. :) Thanks!

Yes, I understand what you're asking for but with the current system, I don't think that's a good idea. We would get a lot of people requesting a boat load of short tracks. I've been wanting to limit the amount of tracks a user can request in a row but that's low on my list of stuff to do. Once I do code that, I will code in the sort by points feature.

*nods* Okay, cool.

Out of curiosity then, how many tracks in a row would you be planning on limiting it to? And for how long would it hold someone in "stasis" before they could request again?

I haven't thought about it that much. I just know I want to do it in addition to also limiting the amount of "time" someone could request at once.

Most likely it'll be around 5 tracks every 30 minutes depending on the length.

I see.

I personally haven't had any issue with the users or requests that are put in - even when its D ticket type people who request a lot. Are there complaints voiced about it to warrant limits?

I think there's more fear than complaints... few complaints. But the fear is understandable. Also, these past months the amount of posts has jumped dramatically!

It would be good to be able to search by points... On the subject of a users making requests in a row, it is sometimes a little problematic, maybe a limit on time would be good (but it would have to cover the max length of your longest track).

I really think searching by points defeats the whole purpose of this radio station. Requesting a song because you like it, because you hate it, because you haven't heard it in forever, because you want to show someone are all great reasons to request.

Searching by points is just searching for songs for request-sake. I think it kind of cheapens the whole experience. Maybe putting a limit on searches so you can eliminate songs you are not able to request would be a better option.

I couldn't agree or put it better myself FlatlandMounty!!! If your requesting just to use all of your points, that could be considered "blocking", the act of filling up the time stream with requests enough that no one will be able to request a song for at least 30 minutes or longer.

Wilderness Lodge is 3290 points. I'm not sure if there are tracks higher than that or not though.

I think searching by points actually allows you to hear something new and create a new favorite. I know there were a few times when I was just trying to find something to round out my requests and I got to hear something interested that I had never heard before.

it's straying off-topic from the original poster, and we already have a thread open on the longest (costs the most points) track(s) in the playlist.

and I believe that the longest track is currently Walt Disney World - EPCOT - parades & shows - illuminations an evening at epcot

Eh, I don't like the request limit idea. Sure, I may have to wait 3 hours until my request is played during the day, but heck, that just means I'm enjoying Spaulo's and AKLRULZ's great lineup!!

/seriously, they make great requests

//another vote for search by point
