Songs less liked vs Longer "non availability" time

Post by wess_80 » Mar Wed 14, 2007 7:44 am

So we all have one or two songs that we can't stand. Songs that make you think about listening to something else. And these songs are always those who have 5 different versions. But if we could (I know there isn't any way to play with this but still), would you like a system which increase the "non availability" time of a song base on votes for a "less liked song".

For example, I don't like to hear too much of the main street electrical parade... and it doesn't help that there is 8 different version of this track. What if I could permanently or temporarily enable an option which would extend the wait time for one of these 8 tracks or all of them. And the more people would do the same, the longer the wait time would be.

Unfortunately, I don't have much control over how the system plays tracks. I'd like to please everybody but it's a futile situation and I don't have the time. It seems the improvements I try and make to please people last about 2 weeks and then it's back to the same issues.

I think it would be neat to have a poll put on the front page and each week 10 more songs are added to that poll. The users can vote which one they like the most and the number one song gets to continue to next week. There also could be the exact opposite type of list the most hated list and if a song stays on the list for more than 5 weeks it should have its request points boosted to like 5000 that way the only way it can be in the list if an admin picks it or the program auto requests when there are no personal requests.

I really dislike the idea from the original poster, but I also appreciate that s/he posted a new idea in the first place.

If songs were left upto a like/dislike system which led to blackouts, eventually the site would collapse upon itself due to the dispersement of people's likes and dislikes.

Alternatively, Yensidaj's idea would potentially lead to an extremely selective/sparse listing of songs everyone enjoyed. Eventually, we would run out of songs.

I like the way the system is set up currently. There seems to be a delicate balance involved, but in a way that most people here can agree with.

Yeah I really don't agree with the post either. But do welcome the suggestions. Keep 'em coming!

I think the system works well now.. Of course there are tracks that are played that I dislike, but I would not want to be the to trash it. The request system keeps it all in check.

There are two different streams. It's unlikely you'll encounter a disliked track on both at the same time. If the Request stream isn't to you liking, try the Scheduled stream. 8)

I wouldn't want to change the system either. I've read enough posts on these forums to know that someone's most despised track is someone else's most beloved track, and I would not like to see SR start to "blacklist" tracks. The system works pretty well as it is.

It's also nice having multiple variations of a track. If one is out of circulation, you can still request another.

The first part of Yensidaj's idea I like but, just a change to it. 10 songs listed on a poll and the winner at the end of the week is added to the playlist. Then the other 9 songs that didnt win go back in the pool of songs to vote on again. Would be neat to look forward too.

One thing I know I need to do is set some tracks to never play randomly on the request stream but still allow them to be requestable. A feature like this is in my to-do list, I just haven't gotten around to it.

I really like the format right now. Sometimes the songs I really want to hear, I have to wait for, but I like the whole waiting aspect for it so it gets me excited to finally request it when it's time

Yeah I would agree, because you never know what you are going to hear next. That part is a big plus.

Don't take my initial comment against what you are doing here. I had no clue on the "what, why and how" of the point system that you implemented for the request station. I didn't know what were the limits of what you could do with this point system.

My comment was more about some songs that you wish you could hear less of. I like this new idea of having songs that won't be played on "random mode" but could still be requested. This would help a lot.
