Search From Address Bar

Post by horizons1 » Apr Tue 11, 2006 5:57 pm

I'm lazy.

I use a web browser called Maxthon, which is a tabbed browser that is based on Internet Explorer (not a replacement). One of the cool features is the ability to store shortcut searches from the address bar. For example, to search Google, all I do is type "g [searchterm]".

I just added a shortcut to search the Subsonic Radio playlist. Now to find area music, for example, I just type "sub area" and I get the results immediately.

This may not be helpful to anybody else, but if you try this or have a similar browser, here's the search string:

http://www.subsonicradio.com/station/pl ... &search=%s

Firefox does this as well. I use it for google (g), php.net (p), dictionary.com (d)

What you do is,
Create a new book mark.
Name it anything.
Put the site and search string in like horizons did
The %s is anything that follows your keyword
Put the keyword you want.

Good idea on the quick search, horizons1

That's cool that FireFox can do it too.

I am really curious if the people writing IE7 are paying attention to all the conveniences built into other browsers.

I use Maxthon too. The best thing that Maxthon does which I don't think foxfire dies is minimize to the tray instead of the program bar. That way your program bar doeesn't say "Subsonic Radio" when you are at work. I wouldn't want any of my employees to think they could be in the forums instead of working (like I am right now) :D

Yeah - tabbed browsing is obviously the future. Other stuff I like in Maxthon are:

1. Groups (I have a Subsonic group that opens one tab for requests and a second for now playing stand-alone)
2. An almost too-powerful ad blocker
3. Mouse gestures (how did I ever live without those?!)
4. Built-in RSS reader (I heard IE7 will have this)
5. Regularly frees up memory (I like watching the Megs go up in the lower-right corner of the browser - makes my crappy work computer seem happier)

I tried that Avant Browser that's also so popular on download.com, but it seems to be more memory-intensive than Maxthon.

Being a web developer, I had to look at this "Maxthon" browser. Firefox has all of these features AND is standards compliant. IE6 is the thorn in a web developers side when it comes to coding for it. Most of you do not know the trouble we go through to make things work correctly on IE while trying to maintain validated code. Maxthon doesn't say anything about standards compliant. If it's based on IE, then I would think it's not. IE7's supposed to fix this.

So use what Subsonic does: www.getfirefox.com
