Dumb question... (sorry) You said it is for the iphone, but will it work for the Touch as well? (I mean I know I would need a wi-fi connection, but as long as I have that, it would work?)

Nice work, Bleu! Can't wait to see this if Apple doesn't hold it up.

It's out! http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/subsonic ... d382017585

(if you're outside of the US, you may need to use http://itunes.apple.com/app/subsonic-radio instead.

It was just approved by apple, so you might get a "this is not available in your store" warning, but try again in a little bit, or immediately, and it'll work. :)

It works on every iOS device out there right now. (all iPod Touches, all iPhones, iPad)
(on iOS 3.0 and newer)

Free!

Enjoy! Y'all are awesome.
...and please rate it/review it if you have a moment. :D

Wow, it works amazingly well! I tested out the Star Tunnel and Soarin' channels and now the scheduled one. It is so amazing to see the track listed too instead of having to go to the Now Playing page.

Just downloaded it and started playing with it. I really love that it works in the background. The only issue is that the music is just too depressing yet for me to listen to.

Thanks so much and I have already submitted my 5 star review to apple!

That was my fascination with it. I tested it to see if it worked in the background and it works well. I'm so glad to have this now.

I logged in after a long break from the forums just to post about this.

So here's my feedback:
Great job! Thank you for taking the time to make this!
I downloaded it on both my iphone3G (iOS4) and on my iPad. Both work great.

Feature requests:
-Volume slider
-Time elapsed/remaining (track length would be sufficient if unable to calculate)
-Stats like total time listened (total/per channel)
-iPad version made for iPad resolution

Feel free to ignore all that if you don't plan to work on it anymore :)

Question. What sort of buffer does it have? I haven't had any problems, just wondering.

:) I've been running it on my first gen iPod Touch and my iPad.

-Volume slider
My thought was; all devices have volume buttons, and I was trying to stay minimal, so I don't display a volume slider on most devices. On a first gen touch, it shows a volume slider, but on other devices, I don't show it. The main screen gets pretty cluttered with it on there, and I couldn't figure out how to make it look good, so I only show it on the small audience still stuck on first gen touch. (like me)
-Time elapsed/remaining (track length would be sufficient if unable to calculate)
I don't think that data is in the stream metadata for me to acquire easily. It's available in the 'now playing' on the site, but that's only for one channel, and I'd have to screen-scrape to get that. I'll put it on the list, but I'm not sure it's possible, sadly.
-Stats like total time listened (total/per channel)
Interesting. I can add that one. I hadn't considered it, but I've already got ideas about how to implement it...
-iPad version made for iPad resolution
You know, I had considered this as well, but I think the problem is that on the iPad, the screen is *too big*. I'm not sure how to lay it out
in a way that A) looks good when rotated and B) looks good without having huge amounts of dead space. I just figured I'd target Touch and iPhone and just let it scale and get fuzzy for iPad. ;) It's on my list now.

Feel free to ignore all that if you don't plan to work on it anymore :)

To be honest, I'm not sure. I'm using a streaming library (http://github.com/mattgallagher/AudioStreamer) and i haven't looked much at the internals. It worked, so i considered it to be mostly a black box. (I used a branch from another fellow iphone devleoper, John Fricker, to get the proper metadata extraction from the song stream, so that I could display the correct song titles while it's playing.)

I'm actually replying to this on the web portion of the application and it's pretty cool. I have the background stream going and it will be much easier for me to listen to Subsonic on here instead of my laptop. I can make my requests on here and listen on here while I charge the iPod.

I like the idea of the total time listened. That would be a great addition to see how much time has elapsed since you started listening.

It really makes me happy that I kept my unlimited data plan.

Does it work in the background with the 3g? or only on the newer 4?
And Len, when you upgraded your phone, did you turn your old phone in to buy the new one or did you keep your old phone? Did you try to resell it? I'm trying to justify upgrading and am not sure I can add another $199 just to get a nicer camera. Plus I think I might want to wait until they get that antenna "death grip" thing fixed...but if I can keep my "old" 3g, and resell it maybe I could offset the cost of the new one?!

A few things about the iPhone 4. The antenna death grip is not really that big of an issue. People are really just trying to make a bigger thing out of it than it really is. If you have a case on the phone there is no issue at all. Even without the issue, I always advise putting a case on it as it will help protect the phone from damage if you drop it. The phone has more than just a better camera. If you have a standard 3G you will gain the video camera, flash, better camera, better screen, will run 4.0 a lot smoother, ability to video chat, much better battery life (about 2 more usage hours from the 3G), and IMO a lot better phone. I did keep my 3G as it really wasn't worth getting rid of it. It is always great as a back-up iPod or even a spare phone that I can always reactivate if this one should break. The app will most likely only run in the background if you have OS 4 or higher on your phone.

Re: volume slider
I completely agree about clutter. I guess what I'm missing is feedback when using the volume buttons. Maybe just have a slider show briefly when the volume is adjusted?

Thanks for considering those ideas. I want to reiterate there is no pressure to do anything. We all appreciate what you've done :)
