Here's a stupid question, because when I hear the answer it's to make me feel completely ignorant:
When I quote people in the forums, my posts no longer contain those quotes in a box, but rather display the code for a quote and then continue with my reply.
So what am I doing wrong? Sheesh... I've been posting long enough I should know what the hell I'm doing.

try disabling HTML. Use the check box at the bottom (not under the quick reply section, but under "post reply"). That'll work for 1-time use, so if you want it all the time, change the option in your profile.
